SPORTS: Port Angeles claims six individual titles at league track meet while Sequim and Port Townsend also excel; other prep reports

POULSBO — Cameron Braithwaite of Port Angeles was a double winner and earned field athlete of the meet honors at the Olympic League track and field championships at North Kitsap High School on Thursday and Saturday.

In addition, the Roughriders had two other boys and two girls win league titles while Class 1A athlete Laura Caballero of Port Townsend captured the girls high jump championship in mostly a 2A meet.

Braithwaite, who won the long jump Thursday and claimed the triple jump title Saturday, sparked the boys team to fifth place with 71 points.

The Rider girls also took fifth with 70 points.

Host North Kitsap captured both the boys and girls league titles.

Best field athlete

Braithwaite, a senior, earned one of the top honors of the competition as he was voted field athlete of the meet by the league’s head track coaches.

“Not only did Braithwaite win the triple jump, long jump and placed fourth in the javelin, he demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship along the way,” North Kitsap boys head coach Dave Snyder said.

“He was helping other athletes with encouragement, coaching them up in finding the board in their jumps, and applauding others’ efforts.

“He exemplifies the spirit of competition and sportsmanship we look for in high school athletics. He’s not even my athlete, but he’s a great kid.”

Braithwaite claimed first in the long jump with a 21-7.25 effort. On Saturday, Braithwaite captured first in the triple jump with a personal best jump of the year at 43-7.

North Kitsap’s Havilah Criss and Kingston’s Sarah Wahl had the same height for a three-way tie.

The Redskins had some strong performances on the girls side with Marie Karlsen earning second in the 400 in 1:01.41 and third in long jump at 15-03.25, Jewel Johnson taking third in the 200 in 27.32 and Brittany Grant claiming third in the 1600 in 5:26.13.
