PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Edmonds at Wally Sigmar Field.
The Pirate women took the first game of Wednesday’s unorthodox doubleheader, beating Lower Columbia 12-0.
Next up for both Peninsula teams are crucial games against their Northwest Athletic Conference West Region rival Highline on Monday at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
The Peninsula men (6-0, 8-0) are stop the West, but the Thunderbirds (4-0-2, 4-1-3) are right on their heels in second place.
The women’s game might be even bigger. Highline (7-0-1,
9-0-1) has a narrow lead over the Pirates (7-1, 9-1) for the region lead.

Caio Maciel scored in the seventh minute of Wednesday’s match off an assist by Victor Sanchez.
Goalkeeper Aaron Zavolokin and the Pirates defense took care of that lead over the final 83 minutes to record the shutout. Zavolokin made four saves in the match.
Maciel is tied for fourth in the NWAC with eight goals.

The matchup between the Pirates, one of the conference’s top teams, and the winless Red Devils went about as expected.
Freshmen forwards Lexi Krieger and C.J. Stetser each scored three goals for Peninsula. Sophomore Alyssa Bertuleit added two goals and an assist.
Stetser scored all three of her goals during a 10-minute span in the Pirates’ eight-goal first half.
Other goal scorers for Peninsula were Mary Pierce, Larkyn Nelson, Tasha Inong and Kai Mahuka. Nelson, Kayla Bell, Brittney Yashimura and Taylor Berg each had two assists for the Pirates.
Goalkeeper Manaia Siania-Unutoa made one save to earn the shutout for Peninsula.
