PREP SPORTS: Sequim boys basketball stuns Olympic to move back in to league title race; other area reports

BREMERTON — Vance Willis scored 15 points to lead Sequim to a big Olympic League road win against Olympic 51-49.

Friday’s victory pushed the Wolves within one game of the Trojans for second place in the league standings, and two back of league-leading North Kitsap with three games to play.

Sequim (6-3, 11-6) split the season series with Olympic and lost 53-50 to the Vikings earlier this month.

The Wolves wrap their season with a home game against North Kitsap (8-1, 13-4) on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

But first they look to avenge a loss earlier this season to North Mason on Tuesday and look to win their eighth straight rivalry matchup with over Port Angeles this Friday.

Against Olympic (7-1, 11-5), Alex Barry produced a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Wolves. Barry also had four steals and three blocked shots.

Jackson Oliver hit double figures with 11 points and had two steals and a block, and Josh McConnaughey grabbed nine boards and scored four points.

The Wolves have won four straight games and six of their past seven since losing to North Mason 60-53 on Jan. 6.

ABERDEEN — The Spartans were outpaced by the Evergreen League-leading Bobcats.

“We got smashed,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.

“Obviously, our team defense wasn’t all that great.”

The Spartans hung with Aberdeen for a quarter, trailing 21-17 after the opening period, but the Bobcats poured on the pressure to run away with the game.

“They are deep and they keep running and press the entire game, even the fourth quarter,” Gooding said.

Colton Raben led Forks with 16 points and Parker Browning added 14.

Addam Follett and Austin Floch scored 23 points apiece for Aberdeen.

The Spartans (1-10, 2-12) host Tenino (5-5, 9-7) on Monday.

Boys Swimming

Port Angeles 130, Olympic 52

BREMERTON — The Riders (6-0, 7-0) capped their Olympic League championship season by finishing undefeated with a dominating win against the Trojans.

John Macias qualified for the state swim meet after winning the 100-yard butterfly in 58.5 seconds.

Macias has qualified for the state meet in all eight individual events.

“In the swimming world, athletes earn the status of ‘Iron Man’ for such an accomplishment,” Port Angeles coach Rich Butler said.

Butler believes this is the first time a Port Angeles swimming athlete has achieved such a goal.

Macias also won the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.

Tristin Butler was a double-event winner, taking the 200 individual medley and the 500 free.

Four other Riders posted district qualifying times.

This included Karsten Hertzog, with a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley; Jay Liang, who was second in the 100 back; and Wei-Yan Fu and Dario Andereozzi, who finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.

Other event winners included the 200 medley relay team of Macias, Liang, Fu and Butler.

Scott Methner picked up a win in the 1-meter dive with 171.6 points

Fu won the 100 free and joined with Noah Sinnes, Milo Atwater and Nathan Bock to take the 200 free relay.

Nathan Beirne claimed the 100 breast in 1:16.03 for Port Angeles.

Crescent’s Patrick Singhose swam the 50 free in 26.21 seconds and the 100 back in 1:12.31.

The Riders host the divisional invitational at Williams Shore Memorial Pool on Tuesday, Feb. 3, with diving starting at noon and swim events at 3:30 p.m.

Wrestling

Port Angeles 64, Bremerton 15

BREMERTON — The Roughriders (7-0, 11-0) stayed unbeaten on the season with a forfeit-laden win against the Knights.

Five of Port Angeles’ six contested wins came by pin.

Winners by pin included Sam Burton at 138 pounds, Andrew Harrelson in the 152-pound class, Thomas Blevins at 170 pounds, Evan Gallacci in the 182-pound division and Roberto Coronel in the 285-pound class.

Matt Robbins earned an 8-0 major decision win in his 195-pound match.

Port Angeles hosts North Kitsap for senior night at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Sequim 60, Kingston 24

SEQUIM — The Wolves picked up five wins by pin to earn a senior night victory over the Buccaneers.

Hayden Gresli was the fastest winner by pin for Sequim, earning his win at 1:31 of the 132-pound match.

Glenn Uy won his 160-pound contest with a pin at 1:53, and Tyler Sloman took his 170-pound match by pin at 2:14.

Kevyn Ward claimed the 152-pound match with a pin at 4:34, Jaime Schroepfer earned a pin at 2:31 of the 106-pound matchup, and Craig Baker knocked off Peyton Reece with a pin at 4:39 of the 126-pound contest.

The Wolves wrap their Olympic League season at North Kitsap on Monday, Feb. 2.

Three Wolves make districts

SILVERDALE — Three Sequim bowlers advanced to the district tournament at the Olympic League tournament on Friday at All Star Lanes.

Dakota Henderson, Tenille Tosland and Kaitlyn Jackson all will participate at this Saturday’s district tournament at Pacific Lanes in Tacoma.
