CHIMACUM — Chimacum is a young team, lacking upperclassmen, but their three seniors stepped up and earned a 25-16, 25-11, 25-21 victory over rival Port Townsend in an Olympic League 1A Division volleyball match.
“It was a pretty solid win for us,” Cowboys coach James Shingleton said of Tuesday’s match.
“We had a couple of impressive serving performances from seniors Shanya and Mechelle Nisbet.
“We really got a boost from the serving runs by the twins.”
“And [senior] Taylor Carthum is our setter and she played really well.”
Shingleton said the trio provides leadership for a large group of sophomores and freshmen.
He also said freshman Emily Thomas has been hitting well on the outside.
It was the first of three games in three days for Chimacum.
The Cowboys (1-1, 3-2) faced Neah Bay last night and visit Klahowya today.
“That third game I tried to play a lot of the bench and get them all some playing time,” Shingleton said.
Port Townsend (0-2, 1-4) visits South Whidbey for a nonleague match today.
Girls Soccer Port Angeles 2, Bremerton 0
BREMERTON — The Roughriders took care of business in a road win over the Knights.
“[We] scored early in the game, dominated possession for large stretches and put the game away midway through the second half,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.
The Riders started the game quickly when some quick passing freed Emily Boyd for a shot from 18 yards. Her shot curled into the post and the rebound was put into the goal from short range by Sierra Robinson.
“[We] dominated the initial stages of the game and ended up with 10 shots on goal, seven of those being saved by Bremerton’s stellar freshman goalie,” Moseley said.
Build 2-0 advantage
The Riders doubled their lead in the 57th minute on what Moseley described as an early-season candidate for “goal of the year.”
Midfielder Leah Haworth won the ball on the Bremerton end line, spotted Taylar Clark open at the far post and floated a perfect cross that Clark crushed into the net.
“I was just thinking eye on the ball, eye on the ball, get this in for the team,” Clark said.
The game marked the team’s third shutout of the season, compared to one in 2015.
“A solid back four in defense along with goalkeeper Madelyn Wenzl limited Bremerton to only five shots, and Wenzl confidently grabbed Bremerton’s two shots on goal.
Moseley also noted the play of defensive center midfielder Shanzi Cosgrove, who took a beating from an aggressive Knights team while providing a solid link through the midfield.
Port Angeles (2-0, 3-1) hosts Olympic (3-0, 5-1) at Civic Field tonight at 6:45 p.m. in an early-season showdown for first place in the Olympic League 2A Division.
Sequim 2, North Mason 1, OT
BELFAIR — Jessica Deitzman’s golden goal late in the second overtime period broke a stalemate between the Wolves and Bulldogs and earned Sequim (1-1, 3-2) its first Olympic League 2A Division win on the season.
It was the second goal of the game for Deitzman. She had found the net on an assist by Daisy Ryan to level the score at 1-1 at halftime.
“The second half was a nail-biter as both teams fought back and forth with several opportunities keeping everyone on the edge of their seats,” Wolves coach Derek Vander Velde said.
Vander Velde named Erin Vig, Adare McMinn, Nathalie Torres, Claire Henninger and Cristina Williams as notable players for their efforts in the win.
Sequim had 10 shots on goal, and Henninger made 17 saves in net for the Wolves.
Sequim hosts North Kitsap (2-1, 2-1) today at 6:45 p.m.
Girls Swimming Port Angeles 118, Peninsula 67
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders splashed past the Class 3A Seahawks for a nonleague victory at William Shore Memorial Pool.
Port Angeles (2-0, 3-0) had three double-event winners, achieved a state qualifying time and two individual district times in Tuesday’s meet.
Felicia Che won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 18.60 seconds and the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.47.
Kenzie Johnson claimed the 50 freestyle (26.42) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.11).
Jaine Macias picked up wins in the 100 free (59.36) and the 100 breaststroke (1:11.34).
Nadia Cole’s second-place finish in the breaststroke (1:12.64) qualified her for the state swim meet.
Emma Weller (1:22.58) and Tana Hiigel (1:22.64) posted district-qualifying times in the 100 breaststroke.
The Riders finished first and outscored Peninsula in nine of 12 swim and dive events.

SEQUIM — The Roughriders edged the rival Wolves in a close match Tuesday.
“The sun was setting as the No. 4 doubles team for [us], Lucas Jarnigan and Kale Mayhew, won in three sets, after dropping the opener, to give [us] the match win,” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said.
“I am impressed with the composure and intensity of all the players today.
All learned from the experience.
Stockton said the team ball went to Jarnigan and Mayhew.
