PREP ROUNDUP: Roughriders girls get off and running

Clark swipes 8 steals for Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — An early exchange of runs swiftly turned into a runaway as Port Angeles dialed up the pressure in an 59-29 Olympic League girls basketball victory over Olympic on Thursday night.

“The game opened with a 10-0 Port Angeles run, followed by a 7-0 Olympic run in response,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “We then outscored Olympic 20-5 to close out the half.”

“Our zone defense produced a number of Trojan turnovers, and in the third quarter, Lindsay Smith scored four lay-ins off Teanna Clark steals plus assists to Lindsay up the court.”

Smith posted her second straight 20-point game to lead all scorers to go along with five assists.

Clark added 12 points, coming close to a triple-double.

“Teanna’s eight steals is the most any Roughrider has had this season, and her seven assists matches Izzy Felton’s seven assists against Bremerton,” Poindexter said.

“Lexie Smith had a stellar overall performance with 12 rebounds, four assists, four steals, and 80-percent field-goal shooting [9 points] on the night.”

Kennedy Rognlien also was active defensively with five steals for the Riders (3-0, 5-1).

Port Angeles visits Class 3A Peninsula today at 3:30 p.m.

SOUTH BEND — A great start and an even better finish propelled the Spartans in an early-season clash for the top spot in the Pacific League.

“We sandwiched a couple of good quarters with a couple of bad quarters,” coach David Hurn said.

“We opened up a 15-3 lead to start and set the momentum and then we had a really rough second and third quarter. We didn’t value the basketball and got frustrated. The game was physical and we didn’t handle it well until the fourth.”

Hurn said Forks changed up its defensive look and took off in the fourth quarter.

“Switched up defense into a press and forced some turnovers and some chaos and hit some shots and we went on a 14-0 run and finished on a 17-5 run. We hit 7 for 8 from the free-throw line in the fourth and you have to make shots in close, rivalry games.”

Forks (2-0, 4-3) went 12 for 17 from the line for the game.

Keira Johnson scored 27 to lead all scorers. Avery Dilley had 11 points, seven of them in the first period.

“This win is huge for our growth being such a young team,” Hurn said. “Raymond and Forks hasn’t historically been a big rivalry but there are grandparents who might remember it as a good rivalry from back in the past. We haven’t done incredibly well against them lately, but we understand who we need to beat to challenge in our league and to go get a big road win like that is big for us.”

The Spartans visit Coupeville on Tuesday.

Boys Basketball Port Angeles 82, Olympic 48

BREMERTON — Kason Albaugh sank six 3-point baskets and played turnover-free basketball as the Roughriders raced past the Trojans on the road Thursday.

“He was 6 for 8 on 3s with 21 points, five steals, five assists and five rebounds,” coach Kasey Ulin said of his senior guard. “He’s been playing really well for us and he was unbelievable last night.”

Ulin liked that his team forced 32 Olympic turnovers that translated into 37 Rider points.

He liked the halfcourt execution by his offense even better.

“At times we played beautiful basketball with great ball movement and guys making the right reads,” Ulin said. “We got great confident shots all night long.”

Parker Nickerson added 18 points on what Ulin termed a “super efficient” 7 of 10 night from the floor, with four steals.

“William Ruddell sparked us off the bench with nine points, and Donovan Heins brought great energy and Matthew Miller is coming on strong.”

Port Angeles (2-1, 3-1) visits Neah Bay tonight at 7 p.m.

JOYCE — The Loggers did all the damage they needed to do in a 28-2 first quarter start.

“We got off to a quick start, pulled back the defense and got a lot of playing time for all of our guys,” coach Chris Ferrier said. “Lukas Love [27 points] had a good game scoring the ball inside and in transition. Mikah Love had five assists as well. We didn’t put up a lot of bad shots and we put some guys in some different spots and they did a lot of good things. We keep working towards playing our best, we aren’t there yet, but things keep tightening up and we are headed in the right direction.”

Bowling PA pins North Mason

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders improved to 8-3 after defeating North Mason Thursday at Laurel Lanes.

Zoey Van Gordon got off to a hot start with a season high 176.

“Zoey did a great job of recording marks in game one and setting the tempo,” said coach Becky Gundersen. Abby Robinson was close behind with a 172. Kenadie Ring, Sophie Constant, and Xoey Penn all helped the cause by increasing their averages on the night and freshman Caidence Pozarzycki also aided in the victory and recorded her first turkey [bowling three strikes in a row].”

Port Angeles is second in the Olympic League and will be off until a Jan. 4 bowl off with first-place Klahowya at Laurel Lanes.
