PREP ROUNDUP: Port Angeles’ Miller nets hat trick in soccer victory

PORT ANGELES — Sophomore Matthew Miller recorded a hat trick and senior Alejandro Martinez had a foot on all three goals as the Roughriders opened the Olympic League season on a good start against a solid opponent with a 3-1 victory over Kingston.

“The Riders scored against the run of play early to take the lead before conceding a penalty kick late in the first half,” coach Chris Saari said. “[Port Angeles] got more connections between Senior Alejandro Martinez and Matthew Miller to add on two more goals and seal the victory. AJ had some sublime passes connecting with Matthew on all three goals.”

Miller already has five goals in two games for the Riders (1-0-0, 2-0-0).

Saari said Grant Butterworth was player of the match defensively after being “rock solid at the back again for PA.” “He was winning headers, breaking up plays and distributing the ball very well,” Saari said.

Miller was the team’s offensive and Martinez the transition players of the match.

Miller found the net first in the eighth minute.

“Alejandro Martinez fed a through pass to Matthew into the left side of the box,” Saari said. “Matthew took a shot that was blocked and then collected the ball on the endline left of the goal. Matthew beat several players along the endline and blasted a shot into the roof of the net past the Kingston goalie from a tough angle.”

Kingston tied the match just before halftime on a penalty kick.

Martinez found Miller in the 50th minute for a 2-1 lead.

“Grant Butterworth played a long ball forward to Alejandro Martinez, who one-touch volleyed a pass in behind the defense to Matthew Miller,” Saari said. “Matthew turned the corner on a defender and hit a hard shot past the keeper.”

The Riders added insurance in the 55th minute.

“Daniel Biondolillo beat a player on the left sideline and passed to Alejandro Martinez,” Saari said. “AJ played a ball across the middle and Matthew got on the end of the pass in behind the defense. Matthew slotted an inside-of-the foot pass past the goalie on the ground to the near post.”

In another Tuesday soccer match, the East Jefferson Rivals got in the win column with a 4-1 victory over Annie Wright. The win improved East Jefferson’s record to 1-1.
