PREP ROUNDUP: Forks wrestlers pin down wins, Port Angeles sweeps double dual

Crazy comeback for Sequim girls basketball

FORKS — No team scores were kept during a three-program meet between Forks, Ilwaco and the Willapa Harbor combine (Raymond, South Bend, Willapa Valley and Pe Ell), but the Spartans shone at home.

“We didn’t keep team scores, but we won,” Forks coach Kyle Weakley said.

“I think we have five returning state placers on the team. Colton Duncan won by pin at 145; Andres Santos-Delacruz at 138 got a pin. Hayden Queen at 182 pinned his guy. The only kid who wrestled for us and lost was Hayden Baker, and he was wrestling at heavyweight. Hayden Baker weighed in at 196, and the only guy close to him was a heavyweight. He was giving up about 50 pounds, and Hayden gave him a match, but it was too much [of a] weight [disparity].”

Jake Weakley earned a quality win by pin and some revenge for a loss over three-time state placer Keegan Kemmer of Ilwaco in their 152-pound match.

“He had a rematch with a kid from Ilwaco who has been fifth, fourth and third [at state], and last week, he beat Jake 3-0 at the Napavine meet,” Kyle Weakley said. “And Jake came out and got the pin.”

Senior Cru Demorest also picked up a win by pin at 152 pounds, and junior Dalton Kilmer earned a pin against a quality wrestler at 132 pounds.

Weakley said his team’s depth has surprised him this season.

“This is the first year in a long time; we’ve always had solid team, but we have a solid wrestler in every weight class from 103 to heavyweight,” Weakley said. “We have had some freshmen come in who have been wrestling for a long time and fill those classes.”

Weakley said freshmen Matthew Montes at 106 and 138-pounder Walker Wheeler have yet to lose a match.

Nate Dahlgren also has been solid for Forks as a freshman and went 1-1 at 170 pounds Wednesday.

Freshman Sebastian Qunneke picked up two wins at 182 in Wednesday’s meet, and Weakley said freshmen Joe Franklin (138) and Aiden Ivey (182) also earned wins for the Spartans.

Forks wrestled in an outdoors tournament with mats set up on the Napavine football field grass last week, a common trend among many schools to avoid capacity restrictions for indoor meets.

Weakley said the Spartans are going to host the Class 1B/2B Southwest District Tournament on June 9 and are planning to do so on the artificial turf of Spartans Stadium.

“Our Plan A right now is to use the football field and set everything up outdoors,” Weakley said. “If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we will split the tournament up into the two gyms we have.”

Weakley said the Napavine tournament went well.

“It was just odd with the weather and being outside in May, but it was definitely a cool atmosphere, and I think we have an even better spot with the turf field. There were some lumps under some of the mats down there.”

The Spartans are back in action this weekend at the Sgt. Norton Memorial Tournament at Rainier.

PA wins dual

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders earned a pair of Olympic League dual meet wins over Bainbridge and Klahowya on Wednesday.

“Zach Gavin had one of the toughest matches of the night at 152 and won by an 8-4 decision,” Port Angeles coach Rob Gale said. “It was a hard-fought match throughout. He got up early, kept the lead and got a good win.”

Freshman Ethan Abrams earned a pin over a Bainbridge Island opponent at 132, and Gale said Daniel Cable at 195 and Adam Borde at 145 also wrestled well.

“Tom Arand, our 182 sophomore also had a good win,” Gale said.

The Riders wrestle against East Jefferson and Central Kitsap at Central Kitsap on Wednesday.

KINGSTON — Melissa Porter scored 15 fourth-quarter points as the Wolves rallied from an 11-point deficit to earn the road win.

“Melissa Porter stepped up big time for us in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 of her 22 points and playing tough defense,” Wolves coach Linsay Rapelje said. “She was 5 of 6 at the free-throw line, making some very important, clutch shots.”

The Julmist sisters also had huge games for Sequim.

“Jelissa Julmist added nine boards, three assists and two steals to her 20 points while older sis, Jayla, had another double-double with 19 points and 21 rebounds, 15 of which were offensive boards. Jayla also had four assists, five steals and a blocked shot. This game came down to the wire, and although Kingston played hard and well, I’m so proud of my players for finishing strong.”
