TUKWILA — Sequim had forced momentum to its side with a power-run game.
But the Wolves fumbled it away near the goal line, and lost to Foster 27-13 in a 2A crossover matchup on Thursday night.
With the loss, Sequim finishes the season 0-10.
The Bulldogs opened up a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, but Sequim’s offense found a winning formula in the latter half of the second quarter, which was to pound the ball with Arnold Black and Adam Knapman.
Black is a sophomore who has been used primarily at fullback and on defense for most of this season, but injuries forced him to into action at tailback.
Knapman opened the season as Sequim’s starting tailback, but his senior season was derailed by an injury against Bremerton in September.
The tandem carried the Wolves down the field, with Black scoring on a 1-yard run to cut Foster’s lead to 13-7 going into halftime.
Sequim picked up where it left off on the first drive to open the second half, but it was halted by a fumble near the goal line.
The Wolves’ defense forced a three and out, and the offense took over in Foster territory.
But an interception ended the ensuing drive, and Sequim’s momentum was but lost.
Later in the quarter, Foster (3-7) padded its lead with a 49-yard touchdown run on a fourth-down-and-1 play by Sele Eneliko.
The Wolves cut the deficit to 20-13 with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Miguel Moroles to Ian Dennis at the end of the third quarter.
The Bulldogs added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter to take a 27-13 lead that would stand as the final score.
Black finished with nearly 70 yards on 15 carries.
After years of dominating the Olympic League and racking up league titles, Sequim has gone 2-17 over the last two seasons.
With only five seniors graduating, the Wolves return a nice collection of talent next year, including Black, junior quarterback Miguel Moroles, junior receiver Josiah Anastasi, junior running back Nate Nelson, sophomore linebacker Chris Whitaker and Dennis, a sophomore receiver.
However, Sequim will also have major holes to fill.
Among those departing seniors are receiver/defensive back/kick returner Brett Wright, and his penchant for making big plays whenever the ball reaches his hands, Alex Serrano, one of the best offensive and defensive lineman in the Olympic League, and standout linebacker Austin Sampson.
Blaine 35, Port Townsend 21
BELLINGHAM — The Redskins’ season ended one game short of their goal of making the state playoffs for the first time since 2004.
Trailing 20-6 after three quarters, Port Townsend opened the fourth with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jacob King to make it 20-13.
The Redskins got the ball back and were approaching midfield when Blaine’s Andrey Baydak stripped the ball and returned it 43 yards for a touchdown.
Port Townsend kept coming. Tim Russell scored on a 35-yard touchdown run and then on a 2-point conversion to cut the lead to 27-21.
But the Borderites responded with a long drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Marcus Potts to put the game away.
The Redskins finish the season 7-3. They’ll have to rebound next season without their three-headed rushing attack of Jacob King, Tim Russell and Matt Cain.
King finished with over 1,400 yards rushing, and Russell and Cain both approached the 1,000-yard mark.
Those three were major contributors on defense as well.
Port Townsend also loses defensive end, receiving leader Skyler Coppenrath and linemen Alex Reierson, Spencer Bond and Max Ghai.
