PREP FOOTBALL: Olympic’s defense overwhelms Port Angeles; other area reports

BREMERTON — The Port Angeles Roughriders ran smack into a defensive fortress at Silverdale Stadium.

Ninth-ranked Olympic has allowed just six points all season, and Friday earned its fourth shutout in five games by defeating Port Angeles 47-0.

“Olympic’s a pretty good team,” Riders coach Bret Curtis said.

“They’re pretty physical, that’s what we found out.”

The injuries are starting to pile up for the Riders, who lost two players to concussions and another, two-way lineman Paul Van Rossen, to a knee injury in Friday’s game.

Curtis was unsure Saturday morning when those players would return.

Kellen Landry ran for 52 yards on 17 carries for Port Angeles, which gained only 111 total yards.

The number of injuries has opened the door for some of Port Angeles’ younger players to see some action, including sophomore Jarrett Burns, who ran four times for 44 yards Friday.

“He shows a lot of promise,” Curtis said of Burns. “He’s got good feet, and he’s a good runner.

“Kellen Landry, he can’t play every play, we got to get him some rest.

“[Burns is] one of our future runners, for sure.”

The schedule doesn’t get much easier for Port Angeles (0-3, 1-4), which faces another unbeaten team, Black Hills (5-0), in nonleague action this Friday.

Lummi 72, Clallam Bay 22

CLALLAM BAY — Well, the Blackhawks still have something to say in the 8-man football discussion on the west side of the state.

Lummi has struggled this year, by its standards, but appears to be returning to full strength, particularly with the recent addition of receiver Trazil Lane.

However, Bruins coach Cal Ritter said Friday’s Northwest Football League opener shouldn’t have been as big of a rout as it was.

“It just went bad from the beginning,” Ritter said.

“There’s no way we should have lost by that much.

“Going into the game, we felt comfortable. We’d done our homework.

“We just came out flat.”

Freshman Clayton Willis again hefted a large load for Clallam Bay.

Willis scored three touchdowns — a 25-yard run, a 70-yard kickoff return and a 40-yard run — and gained 151 yards on 22 carries.

“Clayton Willis, that kid’s come along,” Ritter said.

“He’s got natural talent, and when he decides to use it our advantage, the kid’s a workhorse.”

Lummi quarterback Jonathan Casimir threw nine touchdown passes, and six of those went to Lane, who was playing his first game of the season.

“He’s a big, tall, fast kid,” Ritter said. “They just had to throw the ball up and he’d catch it.”

Lane finished with seven receptions for 256 yards.

“Most of it’s our fault. We kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” Ritter said.

“Penalties killed us, and not tackling. That was the biggest thing: not tackling.”

Not every Bruins defender had a tough game, though.

Martin Cummings made 17 tackles to lead Clallam Bay, and had an interception and a sack.

Alan Greene recorded 12 tackles.

“Both of them played really good games. Especially defensively,” Ritter said.

“Those two really gave it all they could.”

Clallam Bay (0-1, 2-3) was scheduled to play Oakville this week, but that game has been canceled and the Bruins are searching for a replacement opponent.

Ritter said Clallam Bay has received permission from the WIAA to play a 6-man game against Oakville, if the Acorns are willing. But as of Saturday morning, the Bruins are looking for a different team to face.

“I feel bad, because that would be the second time in three weeks [without a game],” Ritter said.

Muckleshoot forfeited its game against Clallam Bay on Sept. 26.

Quilcene 26, Rainier Christian 14

COVINGTON — The Rangers opened SeaTac League play with a mettle-testing victory over the Mustangs.

Quilcene’s lead was only 18-14 late in the game until quarterback Eli Harrison ran for a 60-yard touchdown to make it 26-14.

“Rainier’s pretty good,” Rangers coach Byron Wilson said. “They threw the ball on us a lot.”

Harrison finished with 90 yards on four carries, and A.J. Prater carried 17 times for about 160 yards.

The 12-point win was the unbeaten Rangers’ closest game of the season.

“The kids showed a lot of character in this game,” Wilson said.

“That’s what I like about these kids, you beat on them and beat on them, and they just keep coming. They’re like . . . that little bunny.”

Next up for Quilcene (1-0, 4-0) is a big-time matchup with Evergreen Lutheran.

The Eagles won the league title last year, while the Rangers finished second.

Tenino 47, Forks 14

TENINO —If there is an easy game in the Evergreen League, it isn’t the week that a team plays Tenino.

The Beavers put 20 points on the Spartans in both the first and second quarters Friday to take a 40-0 lead into halftime. That meant that the entire second half would be played with a running clock.

Forks broke through for a couple of touchdowns in the third quarter.

Tenino (2-1, 4-1) ran for 280 yards and didn’t attempt a pass in the game.

Forks (0-3, 1-4) hosts Elma (1-2, 3-2) this Friday in what will be the Spartans’ final home game of the season.

Sequim’s game canceled

CENTRALIA — Sequim was scheduled to play a nonleague contest at Centralia on Friday, but it was canceled due to a lockdown at Centralia High School that was caused by a potential threat of violence.

There was a possibility that the game would be played Saturday, but that ended up not working because it was Centralia’s homecoming dance and a number of Sequim players were taking the SAT.

The game will not be rescheduled.

The Wolves (1-1, 3-1) return to Olympic League 2A action this Friday at North Mason (1-2, 1-4).
