CLALLAM BAY — Hearts were broken at Clallam Bay’s homecoming game against Tulalip Heritage.
Leading 28-22, the Bruins were 9 feet away from taking a two-score lead with three minutes to play before fumbling at Tulalip’s 3-yard line.
The Hawks passed their way down the field, and found the end zone with four seconds left in the game on a pass from Robert Miles Jr. to Dante Jones that tied the game.
Jones then ran in the two-point conversion to give Tulalip Heritage a 30-28 Northwest Football League North Division victory on Friday night.
“It was a tough one,” Clallam Bay coach Cal Ritter said.
“Turnovers and pass defense have been our Achilles heel all season.”
The Bruins’ power-run game put them in a position to win the game.
“Our game plan was to put Calvin [Ritter] at full back and just wear them down with him and Matt Mohr,” Cal Ritter said.
“And it worked. We moved the ball well in the second half.”
Mohr ran for 169 yards, and Calvin Ritter had 61 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown run.
Casey Randall, who played quarterback in the first half, added 64 yards rushing and a pair of scores, and Kelly Gregory ran for 41 yards.
Senior Joe Maneval scored on a 1-yard run for Clallam Bay’s final score.
Cal Ritter lauded his six seniors (Maneval, Mohr, Calvin Ritter, Evan Messinger, Travis Hunter and Brian Smith) for their play on senior night.
“The seniors gave all they had; I can’t say enough about them,” Cal Ritter said.
“I asked them before the game how they want to be remembered, and they played really well.”
Clallam Bay (1-3, 2-6) plays at top-ranked Neah Bay (4-0, 7-0) this Friday.
The following week, the league’s North Division will play crossover games against the South Division.
Port Townsend 62, Tacoma Baptist 0
UNIVERSITY PLACE — Matt Cain went the distance all three times he carried the ball as the Redskins built a 49-0 halftime lead over the Crusaders at Curtis High School.
Cain scored on runs of 49, 70 and 65 yards in the first half. He finished with a team-high 184 yards.
Quarterback Jacob King added three more first-half touchdown runs and threw a 25-yard strike to Besher Little for another score.
King finished with 141 yards on eight carries. He completed 7 of 11 passes for 80 yards.
King’s main target was Skyler Coppenrath, who caught five balls for 55 yards.
As a team, Port Townsend ran for 542 yards. Sophomore Ezra Easley finished with 56, David Sua and Domenick Zack each ran for 46 yards and Isaiah Mason had 43.
Zack and Austin Khile each ran for a touchdown.
Sua led the Redskins with 11 tackles, while Cain and Keegan Khile contributed 10 apiece.
Cain also intercepted a pass and blocked a punt.
Port Townsend (2-2, 6-2) plays a Nisqually League crossover game this week, likely against Charles Wright, for a shot at the 1A Tri-District playoffs.
Evergreen Lutheran 62, Quilcene 36
TACOMA — The Northwest Football League is a complicated mess with the Rangers and the Evergreen Lutheran Eagles now tied for first place with 2-1 divisional records.
Rainier Christian can join them with a win next week.
Quilcene coach Nic Dahl didn’t yet know how the tiebreaker would work.
The Rangers struggled to protect the ball and stop Evergreen Lutheran offense at Franklin Pierce High School on Saturday.
Quilcene had six turnovers, including two snaps over the head of quarterback Jacob Pleines that were recovered in the end zone.
“It was a debacle, basically,” Dahl said.
“We spotted them 20 points in the first quarter.”
Pleines completed 10 of 27 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 124 yards and a touchdown on five carries.
J.J. Smith caught to touchdown passes and had 139 yards receiving. Josh King ran for 41 yards and a touchdown had 68 yards and a touchdown receiving.
A.J. Prater caught one pass fore 39 yards.
The Rangers (2-1, 4-2) have a bye this week before playing a Northwest Football League crossover game the following week.
Elma 30, Forks 7
ELMA — The Eagles moved into a tie for first place, while the Spartans’ postseason hopes took a hit in a game dominated by the Elma defense.
Forks’ lone touchdown came on a 12-yard run by quarterback Javier Contreras late in the fourth quarter.
The Spartans (2-3, 3-5) host Hoquiam on Friday.
Chimacum game suspended
PORT TOWNSEND — Chimacum trailed Vashon Island 21-20 late in the fourth quarter Friday night when a transformer caught fire and caused a power outage at Memorial Field.
The end of the game was originally postponed to Saturday, but the Pirates were unable to make the quick return trip.
The last five minutes of the game are tentatively slated to be played today, according to the Chimacum football team’s Facebook page.
