PREP BOYS ROUNDUP: Riders bury W.F. West in fourth quarter

Gus Halberg scores 37; Brock Hope with seven blocked shots

CHEHALIS — The Port Angeles boys basketball team got 37 points from Gus Halberg, 24 of them in the second half, in burying W.F. West over the final 16 minutes in a 65-53 road victory Saturday.

The victory evens the Roughriders’ record at 3-3 heading into the Christmas break.

W.F. West had a lead near the end of the third quarter at 43-42, but the Riders went on a 14-2 run at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter to seize control of the game.

Halberg began that big run with five straight points, getting fouled at the end of the third and making two free throws. He began the fourth with another drive for a bucket and a foul, making his free throw. Keatyn Hoch added a nice bucket on a baseline drive and Blake Sohlberg hit a 3-point shot during the big run.

After W.F. West attempted a comeback with four straight points to cut the lead to 56-49, the Riders called time out with 3:50 left in the game. They came out of the break with Halberg driving the lane again for a bucket and a foul, converting the 3-point play to make it 59-49. W.F. West never threatened again.

Halberg’s huge game came a few days after he had a 25-point game.

“Gus was phenomenal,” said coach Kasey Ulin. “He just led us all night.”

Ulin was also glad to see his team respond to a one-point loss to North Kitsap earlier in the week.

“We bounced back again from a tough loss. I was extremely proud to see them bounce back,” he said. “The offense executed extremely well.”

Brock Hope had a solid game with eight points, seven blocked shots and six rebounds. Ulin said Hope also played good defense on W.F. West’s star player Carlos Vallejo. Meanwhile, Hunter Flores and Sohlberg each made a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight.

Port Angeles (1-3, 3-3) will play a pair of games at the Yakima SunDome Shootout, beginning with a game at 2 p.m. Friday against Quincy and a game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against East Valley (Yakima).

MONTESANO — The Forks boys basketball team got up on old Evergreen 1A rival Montesano and never let the Bulldogs to gain the lead in a 58-51 road win this weekend.

The Spartans were consistent, scoring between 12 and 17 points each quarter, as they improved to 7-1 on the season.

“It was that consistency,” said coach Keith Weekes. “We’d get up 12 to 14 points and they’d come back to cut it to six or seven, but we would get it back up again.”

Weekes said the Spartans were able to hold off the Bulldogs despite only hitting one 3-pointer all game.

“It was a pretty complete game start to finish,” he said.

Titus Rowley led the Spartans with 21 points to go with 10 rebounds and five steals. Bubba Hernandez-Stansbury had 13 points and six steals, while Brody Lausche had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Kyle Lohrengel led the team in assists with six. He also had six rebounds and three steals, while Noah Foster scored seven.

Concrete 48, Crescent 40

BOTHELL — The Crescent boys basketball team played solid in the first and fourth quarters, but struggled in the middle two quarters in a 48-40 loss to Concrete in a Saturday game played on a neutral court at the Heritage Christian Academy.

“Played two good quarters, and two really poor quarters, and that was the ballgame,” said coach Chris Ferrier. “Showed a lot of fight in the fourth after getting down but the hole was too deep.

“Got out-physicaled, out-coached, you name it, Concrete did it,” Ferrier said. “Good lessons to be learned from this one, we have to find a way to get things done when our shots aren’t falling. Shot about 20 percent from the field and about 50 percent from the free throw line. That won’t get it done.”

Henry Bourm led the Loggers with 14 points, while Mikah Love had 10.

The Loggers (5-3 overall) are off until after Christmas. They next play against an opponent to be named at the North Beach Tournament on Friday.
