ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Kinley Rondeau and Peyton Johnson, Forks girls wrestling

The Hammerhead Invitational is one of the biggest wrestling tournaments in the state, with 99 teams from Washington, Oregon and Utah competing over two days.

It’s extremely difficult for kids from small schools to place, but three girls from 2B Forks did.

The Spartans’ Kinley Rondeau led the way, going 4-2 over the two-day tournament at 105 pounds and finishing fourth. She only lost the third-place match due to a medical forfeit. She won all four of her matches with pins, beating girls from Mount Tahoma, Emerald Ridge and Central Kitsap.

Right behind Rondeau was teammate Peyton Johnson, who went 4-2 at 125 pounds, making it to the semifinals of her class. She ultimately finished fifth. She won with two pins, a 15-0 technical fall and a forfeit. Rondeau and Johnson earned 42.5 points, more than most entire teams at the tournament. Teammate Riley Tjepkema also went 3-3 and finished fifth at 140 pounds to give the Forks girls 55.5 points. Look for these girls to make waves at the Mat Classic coming up in March.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store of Port Angeles.
