PREP BASKETBALL: Neah Bay boys, girls play Tri-District games Tuesday in Port Angeles; Sequim, Chimacum boys also in action

PORT ANGELES — Four North Olympic Peninsula basketball teams continue postseason play tonight, including a pair of Class 1B Tri-District tournament games in Port Angeles.

The undefeated and fourth-ranked Neah Bay girls (15-0) open tonight’s doubleheader against Shoreline Christian (12-10) at 5:30 p.m. at Port Angeles High School.

The Chargers advanced to the opening round of the Tri-District tournament by earning District 1’s No. 2 seed and then defeating Seattle Lutheran 43-26 in Saturday’s play-in game.

The winner of tonight’s game will move on to the Tri-District semifinals Thursday at Mount Vernon Christian High School.

The loser falls into the consolation bracket, where it must win two games on consecutive days to earn a regional berth, and play three games in three days for regional seeding.

In tonight’s second game, the Neah Bay (15-2) boys face Tulalip Heritage (16-5) at 7 p.m.

The Red Devils and Hawks are familiar postseason foes, having faced each other in last year’s Tri-District championship game (Tulalip won 68-66) and the opening round of the state tournament (Neah Bay won 68-60).

The Hawks earned District 1’s No. 2 seed and beat Crosspoint Academy 76-64 in Saturday’s play-in game.

Three of Tulalip’s three losses have come to Class 1B’s top-ranked team, Lummi, which also defeated Neah Bay 75-49 last month.

The Sequim boys and Chimacum boys also are in action tonight.

The Wolves (15-7) continue play in the Class 2A District 1/2 consolation bracket against Renton (11-10) at 7:45 p.m. at Curtis High School in University Place.

The winner advances to play the winner between Clover Park and Olympic on Thursday, while the loser is eliminated.

Sequim and Renton last played each other in the opening round of the 2013 state tournament. The Indians won 59-56 in overtime with a 42-foot heave at the buzzer.

Meanwhile, Chimacum (7-12), after a week off, opens its postseason against Cascade Christian (12-9) tonight at 6 p.m. at Sumner High School.

The Cowboys had a bye in the first round of the Class 1A West Central District tournament after earning the Olympic League 1A championship.

The Cougars advanced to tonight’s game by thrashing Coupeville 59-36.

Tonight’s winner advances to face the winner between third-ranked Vashon and Charles Wright on Thursday, while the loser will play the loser of those two teams in a loser-out, winner-to-regionals game that also will be played Thursday.
