PREP BASKETBALL: Forks’ Adams voted to boys All-State team

SEATTLE — After a remarkable senior season, Forks center Marky Adams earned a spot on the 2016-17 Associated Press Class 1A All-State boys basketball team after voting conducted by sports writers and editors from around the state.

The 6-foot-9-inch post averaged a double-double on the season for the Spartans (16-7), piling up 17.7 points per game on 68-percent shooting from the floor and hauling down 12.4 rebounds per game. The rim-protecting Adams also totaled 2.6 blocks per game for Forks in earning Evergreen 1A League Co-MVP honors with Hoquiam’s Jack Adams, an honorable mention all-state selection.

Adams stepped up as the season wore on, averaging 26 points per game in the team’s final five regular season games (4-1).

Neah Bay senior Kenrick Doherty Jr. was an honorable mention choice for the Class 1B boys team, while the Red Devils’ Tristin Johnson was an honorable mention pick for the 1B girls.

Doherty Jr., the North Olympic 1B League MVP, averaged 12.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.7 steals and 0.5 blocks per game in leading Neah Bay to the state tournament.

Johnson put up per-game averages of 13.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.1 steals, 1.1 blocks and 1.1 assists to earn North Olympic 1B League Girls MVP and lead the Red Devils back to the state tournament after a year’s absence.

Nathan Hale star Michael Porter Jr., was a unanimous choice as the boys’ state player of the year.

Porter was also voted the Class 3A player of the year.

On the girls’ side, Bishop Blanchet’s Jadyn Bush and Mercer Island’s Anna Luce were voted the co-state players of the year. Bush averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per game for Blanchet, but fell short in the Class 3A title game against Luce’s Mercer Island squad. Luce, a senior, averaged 25.7 points and 10.4 rebounds.
