GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim stumbles; Port Angeles clinches share of league crown and Chimacum and Port Townsend earn wins

BREMERTON — The Wolves rallied in the fourth quarter, but they were in too big of a hole and fell on the road 49-45 to Olympic on Tuesday, losing a shot at a possible three-way split of the Olympic League 2A Division girls basketball title.

It was a long shot for the Wolves to get the league title, but now they will have to settle for either second or third in the Olympic League, still a successful year.

The Wolves were undone by a bad second quarter, in which they were outscored 15-5.

“We know playing at Olympic was going to be tough with them vying for the fourth-place seed at district. It was a very physical game, with little to no fouls being called in the first half and we struggled to score,” said coach Linsay Rapelje.

The Trojans took a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Wolves managed to cut it down to two points in the final 10 seconds. Rapelje took positives out of the loss, saying the Sequim players learned a lot in this game.

“Even though it didn’t go our way in the end … I’m proud of the grit we showed,” she said.

Hope Glasser led the Wolves with 13 points, while Kalli Wiker had 12 and Jayla Julmist had eight.

Sequim (8-3, 13-5) plays first-place Port Angeles (10-1, 16-3) at 5:45 p.m. today.

Port Angeles likely needs to win to avoid playing a tiebreaker game against North Kitsap for the No. 1 seed. Sequim is likely locked in to the No. 3 seed out of the Olympic League 2A Division, though if the Wolves win, they could tie with North Kitsap for second place in the standings (if North Kitsap loses today on the road to a relatively weak North Mason team).

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders moved a step closer to an undisputed league championship by crushing the Knights 69-15.

With Tuesday’s win, Port Angeles claimed at least a share of the Olympic League 2A Division girls basketball title. If Port Angeles can beat Sequim on the road tonight, they will earn the undisputed title with no need to play a seeding tiebreaker against North Kitsap on Saturday.

The Wolves gave the Riders a good game earlier this season, losing 59-50, so a win tonight is definitely not a gimme.

Against Bremerton, Port Angeles got off to a fast start, getting up 23-2 after the first quarter and 44-9 at halftime before putting on the brakes in the second half.

“Our ball movement was excellent overall, with some of the best passing and shooting decisions we’ve seen this season — and everyone scored for only the second time this season,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

“We struggled with our outside shots, hitting just 19 percent from 3-point range. Our inside scoring was much better, at 48 percent inside the arc. Madi Cooke, Eve Burke and Jaida Wood were a combined 19-32 on shots inside,” Poindexter said.

Cooke led all scorers with 23, while Burke had 16 and Wood 14.

The Riders honored seniors Aeverie Politika and Summer Olsen before the game.

Port Angeles (10-1, 16-3) will play Sequim (8-3, 13-5) at 5:45 p.m. today in the final regular-season game for both teams. Both the Riders and the Wolves will be moving on to the District 3 2A Tournament.

Chimacum 63, Klahowya 21

CHIMACUM — The Cowboys bounced back from a couple of recent sluggish performances, wrapping up an undefeated season in league by crushing the Eagles in their final regularly scheduled game of the season.

It was the eighth-straight win for Olympic League 1A Division champion Chimacum, though coach Trevor Huntingford said the team didn’t play that great in a couple of wins last week.

“We have not played exceptionally well, I felt [Klahowya] was a nice bounce back game,” Huntingford said. “Last week we’d walk off the court feeling like we had lost.”

Mia McNair led the Cowboys with a unique double-double, with 25 points and 10 steals. She hit four 3-pointers and added five boards and four assists. Huntingford said his star player had a great all-around game.

“Mia and Jada [Trafton] had some passes in transition that were beautiful,” he said.

Grace Yaley had 12 points and Maddie Dowling seven.

Chimacum will finish its regular season at home against Bremerton tonight, but Huntingford said he is trying to make arrangements for an added game because otherwise the Cowboys would be looking at a nine-day layoff until the beginning of postseason.

He said it appears that Chimacum (6-0, 12-5) will face Annie Wright (7-1, 16-2) , the No. 2 seed in the Nisqually League, at Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma on Feb. 12. The Nisqually League champion, Bellevue Christian, is 17-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state in the RPI rankings.

PORT TOWNSEND — Freshman Savanna Hoffmann hit a buzzer-beater at the end of regulation to force overtime and the Redhawks went on to win in the extra period 45-42 over the Bulldogs JV squad.

After starting the season 1-10, it was the fourth win out of five games for the Redhawks. And if Port Townsend can win at Klahowya tonight, the Redhawks will be moving on to the playoffs as the No. 2 seed out of the Olympic League 1A Division.

“We were really young and inexperienced. Really none of them had played together,” said coach Cameron Botkin about the team’s early struggles.

Izzy Hammett led the team with 18 points, while Hoffmann hit a pair of 3-pointers and had 10 points. Gina Brown scored 12 for the Redhawks.

On the final play in regulation, Aurin Asbell made the assist, hitting Hoffmann in her spot exactly as the play was drawn up, said Botkin.

The young Redhawks team managed to hold on in overtime after Hammett, their only truly experienced varsity player fouled out. At that point, it was one senior and all sophomores and freshmen on the floor for Port Townsend.

Port Townsend (1-4, 5-11) will host Klahowya (1-4, 6-11) at 7 p.m. today, with the winner moving on to the West Central District 3 1A tournament. The Redhawks lost to the Eagles 34-18 way back in early December, but came back to win 32-24 on Jan. 15. If Port Townsend makes the postseason, the girls will play the No. 4 seed out of the Nisqually 1A League, likely Charles Wright (2-6, 9-8), on Feb. 7.
