GIRLS BASKETBALL: Port Angeles, Port Townsend earn victories

Wood hits five 3s, scores 24 to pace Riders

BELFAIR — Jaida Wood’s big night carried the Port Angeles girls to a 55-46 Olympic League 2A Division win over a crafty North Mason squad on the road Tuesday night.

Wood went off for 24 points, connecting on 5 of 10 3-point attempts and going 3 of 6 inside.

“We struggled all night from the field, shooting just 29 percent,” Roughriders coach Michael Poindexter said. “Jaida Wood’s solid shooting night (8 of 16) was much needed on a night most players were having trouble getting shots to go in.”

Millie Long scored 11, tied with Myra Walker for the team high in rebounds with eight, and led the Riders with six steals and four assists.

Port Angeles also received some assistance from its bench to get by the Bulldogs.

“Several players contributed points for us off the bench, notably Camille Stensgard’s two 3-pointers in the second quarter,” Poindexter said. “Contributing strong defensive and rebounding efforts underneath were Myra Walker and Catie Brown.”

Poindexter credited North Mason’s effort defensively.

“North Mason played a solid game defensively, effective in the middle and on the baseline in their 2-3 zone,” Poindexter said.

“Our full-court pressure was effective for much of the game, but once North Mason got the ball up the court, we had some lapses in the second half in defending on-ball screens effectively. Sophie Green scored 13 of her 19 in the second half, and Kirstin Griffey scored 8 of her 11 in that half.”
