PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles overwhelmed a short-handed East Jefferson 74-6 in a matchup of programs in polar opposite positions.
The Roughriders (5-0) have racked up a 40-2 record in Olympic League competition over the past four seasons while making three straight trips to the Class 2A state tournament from 2018-20. Port Angeles also boasts multi-year starters over that stretch that have only gotten better with experience.
East Jefferson, a combination of former rivals from Port Townsend and Chimacum, has practiced together for less than a month and is playing against mainly larger and much more experienced 2A and 3A competition this season. Effort hasn’t been an issue for East Jefferson, but the deck is clearly stacked against them this season.
The Riders played the passing lanes particularly well in the win with Millie Long and Eve Burke tying for the team high in steals with five apiece and Jaida Wood adding four.
“We had our second game in a row in terms of outstanding ball movement in both our zone and man-to-man offenses,” coach Michael Poindexter said.
“We were in a 2-3 zone [defense] for much of the game and did an excellent job of getting deflections and steals out of that.”
Long led Port Angeles with 21 points on 9 of 10 shooting to raise her season average to 69 percent from the floor, an almost unheard of percentage for a guard. The Riders shot 31 of 58 (55 percent) for the game.
Long added five assists.
Burke totaled 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting and added five rebounds.
Wood scored 10 with a team-high eight rebounds.
Anna Petty also had a hot hand for the Riders, hitting 4 of 5 attempts for eight points.
Port Angeles visits Bainbridge tonight while East Jefferson hosts North Kitsap.

CLALLAM BAY — The Greenes led the way for the Red Devils in the Battle of the Bays, with Laila Greene and Allie Greene combining to hit nine 3-point shots in the game.
Laila Greene scored 17 points, including knocking down 5 of 9 3-point attempts and adding five rebounds, an assist and a steal. Allie Greene scored 16 points and was 4 of 10 from beyond the line.
Three of Allie Greene’s triples came in the second quarter as Neah Bay extended a 12-8 advantage after one frame to a 27-15 halftime lead.
Peninsula College commit Ruth Moss scored nine points with four steals and two assists for the Red Devils (3-0).
Ezra Ray, a Neah Bay transfer, led Clallam Bay with 12 points. Cedar Johnson added 11 and Amber Swan added nine for the Bruins.

JOYCE — The Loggers’ lone senior, Chloe Mandeville, played her heart out on senior night, coach Jonathan Whitehead said, but Crescent fell short against the Bears.
Mandeville had five points and hit one of the Loggers’ seven 3-point baskets.
Ciara Cargo-Acosta led the way with 16 points for Crescent (1-4), and Kaylen Mason added seven points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
“We really needed a third official on the court as the game was extremely physical, and a lot of contact was let go early on in the game,” Whitehead said. “I am proud of our girls for maintaining sportsmanship throughout such physical play.”
