SEATTLE — Sequim High School graduate Frank Catelli’s two event victories helped push the University of Washington’s men’s track and field team to a history-making 113-50 meet victory against rival Washington State.
Catelli, a junior with the Huskies after transferring from Western Washington, set a personal record with a career-best throw of 179 feet, 1 inch in the discus during Saturday’s meet.
That throw pushed Catelli up the ranks and into the mix for the NCAA West Preliminary Championship, which is later this month at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
Catelli stepped up again to win the shot put, throwing 58-5.75 on his second attempt.
His two wins came as Washington set a record for meet points against the rival Cougars, rolling to the most team points in the 96-year history of track and field competition between the schools.
“It was just a great day for both our teams,” Washington head coach Greg Metcalf said.
“I’m sitting here trying to think where didn’t we perform well. And there were not a lot of those.
“Our sprinters did a great job, our jumpers swept the horizontal events, our pole vaulters broke both meet records, Frank Catelli and Gina Flint both won two events for us . . . That’s as balanced a team in this meet that we’ve ever had.”
Maxwell selected
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Port Angeles High School graduate Alison Maxwell earned a place on the New England Small College Athletic Conference All-Conference women’s track and field team.
The top three finishers in each event at the NESCAC Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Championships receive All-Conference recognition.
Maxwell won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17 minutes, 31. 82 seconds.
Rangers at SMU
LACEY — Olympic College track and field athletes Jayson Brocklesby and Hannah Hudson of Sequim and Jolene Millsap of Port Angeles competed in the Saint Martin’s University Invite over the weekend.
Competing against athletes from four-year schools, Brocklesby finished third in the high jump with a leap of 6.23 feet, and was a member of the second-place 4×400-meter relay team for the Rangers which finished in 3:38.22.
Millsap picked up a fourth-place finish in the 100 after a time of 13.04 seconds, and was sixth in the 200 with a time of 26.55 seconds.
Hudson and Millsap teamed to help Olympic to a victory in the 4×400 relay (4:07.16) and a runner-up finish in the 4×100 relay (49.25).

Konopaski honored
PARKLAND — Pacific Lutheran University closer A.J. Konopaski of Port Angeles was one of five Lutes earning first-team all-conference recognition from the Northwest Conference.
Konopaski, a senior, claimed first-team honors for the third straight season after leading the league and ranking second in the nation in NCAA Division-III with 10 saves this season.
He became Pacific Lutheran’s first first-team All-American last season and this season became its all-time career saves leader while also becoming only the sixth player in Division-III history to reach 30 career saves.
Konopaski also was profiled as part of the Lutes’ Student-Athlete Spotlight.

Cray hitting well
PHOENIX — Chimacum High School product Landon Cray performed well at the plate for Seattle University as the Redhawks lost a three-game series to Arizona’s Grand Canyon University.
Cray had the eventual game-winning RBI single and scored two runs in Seattle’s lone win on the weekend, a 3-2 victory Saturday.
The left-handed junior went a combined 7 for 16, with six RBIs and four runs for the Redhawks (23-23).
He is batting .301 on the season with one home run and 19 RBIs for Seattle.
Softball
Hopson leads Tech
AMES, IOWA — Former Sequim High School standout Lea Hopson helped lead Texas Tech to a Big 12 Conference series victory over Iowa State this past weekend.
Hopson went 3 for 4 in the Red Raiders’ 2-1 extra-innings win over the Cyclones on Saturday.
It was her 10th multiple-hit game of the season and the 17th of her career.
She recorded half of Tech’s six hits with singles in the second, fourth and eighth innings.
Hopson is batting .326 for the Red Raiders this season with a team-high 11 home runs and 37 RBIs.
She was recently profiled by the Texas Tech student newspaper, The Daily Toreador.
