COLLEGE SOCCER: Pirates score in stoppage time for force a tie with Shoreline

SHORELINE — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team will have to wait another game to lock up a North Region championship after a 2-2 tie with Shoreline on the road Saturday.

And the Pirates were fortunate to pick up that one point in the standings. Shoreline scored a go-ahead goal in the 79th minute, but Peninsula’s Max Pieper scored a game-tying goal in stoppage time to salvage a tie and a point.

Meanwhile, the women beat Shoreline 11-0, extending their scoreless streak to more than 900 minutes.

The tie means that the men (8-0-3, 27 points) are one point behind Whatcom (8-0-4, 28 points) in the standings with one game to play. Whatcom is done with its regular season. Both teams are moving on the postseason regardless of what happens Wednesday.

Peninsula has a chance to lock up a North Region championship at home Wednesday against Bellevue (4-6-1, 6-6-1). Peninsula takes the North Region title with a victory. If Peninsula loses, Whatcom wins the North. If Peninsula ties Bellevue, Whatcom and Peninsula end up tied with identical 8-0-4 records. The two teams also tied each other twice this season.

Jeremy Obah had the Pirates’ other goal in the 60th minute. Peninsula had a big advantage in shots on goal — 17 to seven. Shoreline’s Kenzo Surget made 15 saves to keep the Dolphins in the match.

In the women’s game, Kasi Baker, Atianna Tauiai Fuamatu-Ma’afala and ISIS-Jade Bryant all had hat tricks. Alyssa Carney and Madie Haggart each had goals. The women (10-0-1) have outscored their opponents 73-1 this season and have already locked up the North title and a first-round bye.

No other women’s team in the NWAC has scored more than 40 goals.

The men’s game begins at 2 p.m. while the women play at 4:15 p.m. It is sophomore recognition day as it’s the final home regular season games for both teams. Postseason begins Nov. 8 for the women and either Nov. 5 or Nov. 8 for the men.
