PORT ANGELES — After struggling a bit during their past three games, the undefeated Pirate women set a new all-time goals scored record for the Northwest Conference on Saturday, tallying 13 goals in a 13-0 rout over Edmonds.
The men also won their regular season-ending match, beating Edmonds 4-3. They have a first-round playoff match at Sigmar Field on Wednesday.
Breaking the old record of 129 was a bit in doubt because the Pirate women had scored just nine goals in their past three matches. They needed seven goals to tie and eight to break the 2007 record established by Walla Walla. After Saturday’s match, the Pirates ended the regular season with a staggering 135 goals in just 18 matches, an average of 7.5 goals per game. Walla Walla held that old record in 24 matches.
“We know the record is sort of trivial in comparison to playing well. It’s a secondary goal, but it’s a huge secondary goal even though we wouldn’t trade it for other things we’re going after,” said coach Kanyon Anderson.
More importantly, the women played well after having a bit of a “lull” over three games, which they all won, but won by the scores of 3-1, 3-1 and 3-2. Anderson wasn’t happy after that 3-2 win over Whatcom last week.
“I felt we were doing things correctly, we just didn’t have the energy,” Anderson said. “[Saturday] felt like a playoff game. We had the spark and the enthusiasm.”
Kelly Kevershan led the Pirates with a hat trick. Sydney Warren had two goals to add to her NWAC-leading 30 goals for the season. Jayna Morikawa, Taylor Graham and Madelene Parton added two goals apiece, while Yasmin Escobar-Moreno had a goal (one goal was an own goal by Edmonds).
Warren, Parton, Morikawa, Malia Brudvik and Jordyn DiCintio all had assists.
The Pirates ended the season with six out of the top 14 goal scorers in the NWAC — Warren, Graham, Parton, Janis Martinez-Ortiz, Kevershan and Morikawa, who all had double digits in goals scored. They also finished with six out of the top 12 players with points (Warren, DiCintio, Graham, Parton, Martinez-Ortiz and Kevershan).
Warren led the NWAC by a huge margin with 67 points, well ahead of second-place 46.
DiCintio also led the NWAC in assists with 27. The next highest player had 12 assists.
Despite only outscoring three opponents 9-4 during a late-season lull, the Pirates finished outscoring their opponents 135-9.
The Pirates (15-0-0, 18-0-0), defending champions of the NWAC, get a first-round bye in the NWAC playoffs and begin their postseason with a game at noon Saturday at Sigmar Field. The game will be played against the winner of a match in Eugune, Ore., between Lane Community College from the NWAC’s South Division and either Lower Columbia or Bellevue from the West Division. Lower Columbia and Bellevue are tied and may be playing a play-in match to see who faces Lane.
Men’s Soccer
Peninsula 4, Edmonds 3
PORT ANGELES — The Pirates got two goals and two assists from Juan Carrillo-Perez to hold off Edmonds 4-3 to finish off their season with a victory.
Peninsula (10-1-4, 12-2-4) will begin its playoff run with a game at 2 p.m. Wednesday against Walla Walla, the third place team out of the NWAC’s East Division.
The Pirates also got goals from Joey Hollimon and Joshua Lopez.
Carrillo-Perez’s big day left him at third place in the NWAC in goals scored with 15 and second in the NWAC in points with 36. The Pirates’ Cesar Gervacio led the entire NWAC in both goals and points with 18 and 41. Hollimon finished seventh in the league with 12 goals and seventh in points with 29. The Pirates’ Adrian Benitez was second in the NWAC in assists with nine.
Walla Walla comes into Wednesday’s opening-round playoff match with an 8-4-0 record in league and 11-5-0 record overall.
