COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men tie Whatcom for second time; women have outscored North opponents 87-1

BELLINGHAM — For the second time this season, the Peninsula soccer men came away with a draw with a tough, unbeaten Whatcom squad.

The Pirates went into Saturday’s match with the Orcas hoping to avenge a tie earlier this season, but they came away with a 3-3 tie thanks to a late goal from Juan Carrillo.

In the women’s game, the Pirate women remained perfect on the season with a 7-0 shutout over Whatcom.

In their earlier meeting, the Pirates struggled in the first half against the Orcas, a tall, physical team. This time, Peninsula got off to a fast start with goals from Cesar Gervacio and Carillo in the 26th and 42nd minutes. Gervacio’s goal was unassisted while Carrillo’s was assisted by Joey Hollimon.

The Orcas rallied with three quick goals in the 53rd, 62nd and 67th minutes to take a 3-2 lead. But, the Pirates fought back with Carrillo’s goal in the 68th minute, assisted by Calvin Aguirre.

Peninsula finished the game with nine shots to Whatcom’s 12.

The Pirates remain undefeated in North Division play in second place with 19 points behind 7-0-2 Whatcom (23 points). The only blemishes on Whatcom’s league record have come from the two ties with Peninsula.

One blemish in the game was a total of five yellow cards and a red card against the two teams. The Pirates’ Hollimon picked up the red card.

After this game, Gervacio is leading the Northwest Conference with 13 goals. Carrillo is third in the conference with 10 goals.

Peninsula (5-0-4, 7-1-4) plays at Edmonds at 6:15 Wednesday. The Pirates beat Edmonds earlier this season 4-0.
