BOYS AND GIRLS GOLF: Sequim’s Jacobsen, Shea, Port Townsend’s Lake win Olympic League golf titles

SEQUIM — Sequim sophomore Paul Jacobsen won the Olympic League 2A Boys Golf Championship with a 1-under-par round of 71 at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course on Tuesday, one of four Wolves to finish in the top seven and automatically qualify for the Class 2A State Tournament later this month.

“The weather was perfect, the course was in excellent condition and we had over 100 kids playing from 10 different teams,” Sequim coach Bill Shea said.

Jacobsen began his round on the back nine, where he made par on seven of nine holes. Jacobsen closed out his round with four birdies on the front to claim the title.

Also joining Jacobsen at the state 2A tournament at Columbia Point Golf Club in Richland: junior Blake Wiker, sophomore Andrew Vanderberg and senior Josiah Carter.

Wiker finished second, two strokes back of Jacobsen with a 1-over-par round of 73 that included four birdies.

Vanderberg shot 3-over-par 75 and ended up in a three-way tie for third in a round that featured one birdie and 13 pars.

Carter finished seventh after shooting a round of 77 with three birdies.

Sequim will be able to compete as a team at state with four players, but the Wolves could field a larger team as Liam Payne shot an 85 to finish 11th and qualify for the Class 2A West Central District Tournament on Tuesday at Gold Mountain Golf Club.

Wiker will be playing in his third state tournament, while Jacobsen, Vanderberg and Carter are making their second straight state trip. Sequim has finished ninth at state the last two seasons.

Three Port Angeles golfers also qualified for the district tournament: Mathew Locke placed ninth with a round of 83, Nate Drake was 15th with a 90 and Skyler Cobb (91) won a one-hole playoff to advance as the 16th and final golfer.

“Mathew played consistent golf and finished in the top 10,” Roughriders coach Gil Stockton said. Nate had one of his best showings of the year.”

“Skyler Cobb did some great scrambling on the first playoff hole and won a spot to districts by making a timely up-and-down. He rolled in a tricky 15-foot putt for par to win the hole. All the guys on the team made some great shots and gained valuable experience on a beautiful day at Cedars.”

Class 1A boys results

Four Chimacum players and one Port Townsend golfer advanced to the Class 1A West Central District Tournament on Tuesday at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton.

The Cowboys’ Logan Storm and the Redhawks’ Jacob Madison finished in a tie for second after shooting 86, 11 strokes back of 1A champ Garrett Betzing of Klahowya.

Chimacum’s Nate Miller (99), Brayden Yingling (101) and Shawn Storey (107) also will play in the district tournament.

Shea wins 2A girls title

SEQUIM — Sequim’s Sarah Shea won the Olympic League 2A Girls Golf Championship by nine strokes, shooting a 4-over-par 76 on Tuesday at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course.

Shea automatically qualified for her third consecutive state tournament appearance with the low round of the tournament. The Western Washington University-bound Shea finished 15th in 2016 when the Wolves girls finished a school-best fourth as a team and 22nd last season when Sequim came in ninth.

Maddie Uranga, Sam Smith and Yana Hoesel also qualified for Tuesday’s 2A West Central District Tournament by finishing in the top 14 and Jessica German will be the tournament’s second alternate.

Uranga finished sixth with a round of 94, Smith was seventh (97), Hoesel carded a 107 and tied for 11th and German was 16th (111).

“I am so proud of all the girls for their 2018 league title and how well we showed today,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said. “We have a lot of work to do still. I am confident that we will take four players to state.”

Lake wins 1A crown

SEQUIM — Port Townsend’s lone girls golfer McKenzie Lake won the Class 1A Olympic League Girls Golf Championship by seven strokes, shooting a round of 91 to advance to the 1A West Central District Tournament at Gold Mountain Golf Club on Tuesday.

Lake is seeking her second straight 1A state tournament appearance.

Lake placed 34th at state last season.
