BASEBALL: Wilder opens with sweep of Aberdeen

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Baseball’s season got off to a fast start.

The Port Angeles Senior Babe Ruth team plated seven runs en route to a 10-0 win in five innings over Aberdeen in the first game of a doubleheader sweep at Civic Field on Sunday.

Wilder won the second game 12-3.

Brady Konopaski was 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs and Larsson Chapman was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to lead Wilder.

Brett Wright added a hit, two runs and an RBI and Tanner Gochnour doubled and drove in a run.

Nick Johnston earned a complete-game victory for Wilder, striking out eight and allowing just four hits.

Konopaski added three more hits and Tanner Rhodefer drove in four runs in the second game.

Zach Withrow was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and James Grubb brought in a couple of runs in his only at bat.

Wilder scored one run in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth before exploding for five in the fifth to take a 9-3 lead.

Travis Paynter earned the victory by striking out five in four innings on the mound.

Jordan Shepherd took over for two innings and struck out two while giving up two runs.

Rhodefer pitched a scoreless and hitless seventh inning, striking out two.

The Wilder senior team (2-0) returns to action this weekend at the Foote Invite in Hoquiam on Saturday and Sunday.

The next home games are doubleheaders against Pac Tech on Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8.
