PREP SOFTBALL: Sequim, Port Angeles advance to state competition at district tournament

TACOMA — Sequim and Port Angeles advanced to this week’s Class 2A state tournament by winning their first games of the West Central District tournament at Sprinker Fields.

The Wolves also won their second game to earn a spot in the district championship game against Fife.

Sequim and Port Angeles both had first-round byes and had to wait to see who would be their first opponents.

Bremerton defeated Steilacoom 16-7 to advance to a second-round matchup with the Wolves in a winner-to-state showdown.

Powered by an Alexas Besand homer, Sequim beat the Knights for the third time this season 10-0 to punch a ticket to state.

The Wolves then shut down Orting 3-1 Sunday morning to make the district title game.

The Roughriders opened the district tournament against Franklin Pierce, which routed Renton 19-2 in the first round.

Port Angeles gave the Cardinals a taste of being on the losing end of a rout by winning 10-3.

On Sunday, the Riders fell to No. 1 seed Fife 10-5 to drop into a third/fourth-place matchup with Orting.

The first day of districts was rained out Friday, moving the games to Saturday and Sunday.

The 2A state tournament will be played this Friday and Saturday at Carlon Park in Selah.

Sequim will be making its fourth consecutive state appearance, while Port Angeles has reached state for the second straight year.

Rangers open against Warriors

Quilcene now knows who it must go through first at the Class 1B state tournament: Almira/Coulee-Hartline.

The Rangers and Warriors will play Friday at 1 p.m. at Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline beat Quilcene 10-6 in the first round of last year’s state tournament on its way to a second-place finish.
