Slugs get extreme at Joyce Daze

JOYCE – It was a day at the races for local slugs and for visitors to Joyce Daze on Saturday as the Fourth annual Extreme Slug Racing took place at the Family Kitchen’s Beer Garden in Joyce..

Three races were run after the Joyce Daze Parade. Each race was limited to an hour and featured 13 slugs per heat.

Slugs raced under names such as “Darth Veda,” “Poor Man’s Peach,” “Mucous Lucas,” “Sticky Fingers” and “Slippen Slyde.”

This annual event is sponsored by the Family Kitchen whose entry this year was named Turbo.

Other local businesses also supported the event, with Wilder Auto’s entry, “Jetta the Jedi” and Bedford’s Sodas’ “Bedford’s Pop Pop”.

Winners of the three races were: Race 1 — “General ‘Duke’ Lee,” Race 2 — “Bob Ross,” and Race 3 — “Bedford’s Pop Pop.”

Race fans were invited to place a donation on their favorite slug and if that slug won, they had the option of claiming their donation back. No donations were claimed back.

All proceeds benefit Clallam County Fire Protection District No. 4 in Joyce. Organizers say the event raised $756, which will presented to the Fire District.

Since several Canadians made donations, and another via PayPal from Thailand, organizers say the event can now officially claim international status.

Organizers are already planning next year’s race.
