AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Second American Legion baseball tryout Friday at Civic Field

Peninsula Tennis Club will offer free instruction

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula Tennis Club is offering free tennis instruction, drills and supervised play for area youth 8 to 12 years old. Sessions will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays beginning June 1 at the Erickson Playfield courts on Race Street.

Interested parents should call Bob Ritchie at 360-808-9298 or send an email to peninsulatennisclub1@ gmail.com to get additional details and to register.

Another baseball tryout

PORT ANGELES — Because so many kids showed up at a tryout Sunday, a second tryout for Wilder Junior and the Olympic Crosscutters baseball teams will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Civic Field in Port Angeles.

A total of 46 players showed up for the first tryout session.

The Crosscutters’ Single-A (seventh- through ninth-graders) Legion team and the AA Wilder Junior (high school freshman-juniors) squad will play this summer along with a Wilder Senior team of high school juniors to incoming college freshmen.

Wheeler, Lunt all-stars

LONGVIEW — Port Angeles High School graduates Nizhoni Wheeler and Lauren Lunt were named to the NWAC South Region All-League first team.

Wheeler and Lunt both play for Lower Columbia College. Wheeler was named as a pitcher and Lunt as a catcher.

Wheeler was 10-6 with a save and 68 strikeouts in 115 innings.

Lunt hit .434 with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs in 42 games.
