AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Rivals soccer loses playoff heartbreaker; Klahhane gymnasts shine

TACOMA — The East Jefferson girls soccer team held a 2-0 lead in the second half in its postseason play-in game this weekend, but wasn’t able to stop Annie Wright from scoring three late goals in a 3-2 loss, ending the Rivals’ season.

“There were a lot of bummed girls … and myself included,” said coach Rob Cantley.

Iris Mattern scored the Rivals’ first goal on a header on a corner kick from Ava Shiflett. The Rivals got their second goal on a solo effort from Mattern. “We were feeling pretty stoked at that point,” Cantley said.

Annie Wright was able to come back with two goals on corner kicks and another goal on a long, looping shot from 20 yards out to take the lead. The Rivals thought they might have gotten an equalizer at the end of the game when the ball appeared to trickle over the line, but officials were not able to see the ball in a big pile up of players in front of the net, Cantley said.

The Rivals (3-11-1) graduate stars Shiflett and Mattern, who will both likely make all-league. However, they have a lot of young players coming back next year.

Klahhane gymnastics

KENT — The Klahhane gymnastics team tested new divisions and new skills at the Pumpkin Fest Meet hosted by Metropolitan Gymnastics on Saturday.

A rule change this year requires all gymnasts to score an all-around of 35.0 twice to qualify for the state meet. Previously the bronze and silver divisions needed to score 35.0 once and the gold and platinum a 34.0 once.

The bronze division gymnasts are all new to the team and were competing for the first time. Abigail Odland and Emily Bair started out finishing one-two in the junior C age group. With an all-around score of 36.575, Odland edged out Bair’s score of 36.450 to claim the gold medal. Zayleigh McCullum and Laquoia DePiro competed in the junior A age group, finishing eighth and 12th.

Paytynn Lindley led the silver division junior B age group with a 36.075 all-around. CarleyMae Rigs finished sixth in the junior A group with a score of 35.625.

Harper Waterkotte placed seventh in the junior B group. Morgan Smith, who is recovering from a wrist injury, competed in three events, skipping the vault. In the junior C age group, Raeleigh Thomason finished eighth.

Lainey Depiro led the gold division, taking first all-around in the junior B age group with a 36.2. She picked up gold medals on the bars (9.375) and the floor (9.450). Gracelyn Goss and Raynee Ciarlo finished seventh and ninth in junior B and Daylen Williams ninth in junior C.

Klahhane had the only platinum gymnasts in the meet. Scarlet Sullivan (35.750) finished just ahead of teammate Elyse Brown (35.550) for the all-around title. Mariah Traband turned in a 35.175 all-around and the highest bar score of 8.8. Harper Hilliker rounded out the group. The girls were complimented for their choreography and expression by the floor judges.
