AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: East Jefferson Little Leaguers state champions; Wilder Sr. wins again

PORT TOWNSEND — The East Jefferson Junior Little League 14U team won the state championship last weekend and is off to regionals in Bend, Ore., next week.

The EJLL team beat Stilly Valley out of Arlington 15-4in Port Orchard to win the state junior division title, improving the team’s record to a perfect 25-0.

The West Region tournament runs from July 23-31.

The last time an East Jefferson Little League team went to regionals in this age group was in 2003. The West Region tournament will have some games broadcast on ESPN. There are 14 teams from 12 western states in the double elimination tournament. The Little League World Series will be held in Michigan Aug. 3-10.

Wilder Sr. 3-0

KELSO — The Wilder Senior Baseball Club improved to 3-0 at the Babe Ruth Senior state tournament in Kelso, scoring all the runs it needed in the first inning on a Braydan White double and going on to win 3-1 over the Prosser Expos.

It was a pitchers’ duel for most of the game with Kody Williams, White and Alex Angevine out-battling Prosser’s pitching staff. Williams went five innings, allowing six hits, no walks and one earned run. He struck out three. White pitched a scoreless sixth inning, allowing one baserunner on a walk, and Angevine pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out one to earn the save.

In the top of the first inning, Josiah Gooding got on base with a single. White then hit a double, driving in Gooding, then he came in on a Prosser error to make it 2-0.

Wilder Senior tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning. Colton Romero got on base with a single and Landen Olson drove him in with his own double.

Gooding, White and Romero all finished the game 2-for-3.

Wilder Senior (26-6-1), which has now won seven in a row and has allowed just two runs in its past six games, plays the Bulldog Academy 18U team at 10 a.m. today, looking to go 4-0 in pool play. The championship round begins Saturday with times to be determined.

Wilder Junior (22-4-1) also returns to action in Centralia today against the FCA Lumberjacks at 10 a.m. and the Expos 17U team at 2:30 p.m.
