ADVENTURE SPORTS: Nearly 300 go the distance in the GOAT Run

PORT ANGELES — Neither heat nor smoke were a factor as more than 300 people from 13 states and four countries raced in this year’s Great Olympic Adventure Trail races held this weekend in the hills west of Port Angeles.

The GOAT races are endurance events put on by Peninsula Adventure Sports and go along paved and unpaved routes along Kelly Ridge near Lake Crescent.

It was warm this weekend with temperatures in the 80s and a little smoky, but race director Lorrie Mittmann said no problems were reported with the smoke. About 450 total people attended the all-day event.

John Mauro of Port Townsend was the one local winner. Mauro won Wave 2 of the half-marathon with a time of 1 hour, 27 minutes, 38.27 seconds, the best time of the day. Mauro was also the winner of June’s North Olympic Discovery Marathon in Port Angeles.

Winning Wave 1 of the half-marathon was Joshua Corbin of Silverdale in a time of 1:37.36.43.

Allie Malenfant of Silverdale had the best women’s time in Wave 2 at 1:43:17.56 and the best overall time. The best women’s finish in Wave 1 was by Erica Swanson of Seattle in 1:51:45.61.

In the most brutal event, the 50K (about 31 miles), Christian Canham of Seattle won with a time of 3:49:55.26. The best women’s time was by Arielle Knutson of Seattle in 4:43:45.77. Knutson was also fourth overall.

In the marathon, Sawyer Thomas of Seattle won with a time of 3:32:20.95. Victoria Tyler of Danville, Calif., had the best women’s time at 3:50:07.56. Tyler finished fifth overall.

A total of 313 people entered and 286 finished. The two half-marathon waves had 183 finishers, the marathon 37 and the 50K 66.

Peninsula Adventure Sports also puts on the annual Big Hurt, a four-discipline endurance team race that incorporates mountain biking, kayaking, road cycling and running. The Big Hurt will be held in and around Port Angeles on Sept. 24.

Top 10 finishes in each event include:
