Kiwanis wins high-scoring showdown
PORT ANGELES — Although out-hit 10 to five, Kiwanis took advantage of 16 base on balls to earn a come-from-behind 16-15 victory over ILWU in five innings in 16U softball action.
ILWU scored six runs in top of first, all with two outs, in Monday’s game.
In the bottom half of the inning, Kiwanis countered with three runs.
ILWU batted around in the second inning and scored four more runs to take a 10-3 lead.
Kiwanis also batted around in its half of the second, scoring six runs to cut the deficit to 10-9.
Kiwanis then tied the game with a run in the third.
ILWU took the lead 11-10 in top of fourth. But in the bottom of the inning, Kiwanis plated five runs to take a 15-11 lead.
Back came ILWU, scoring four runs in the fifth inning, tying the game on a grand slam by Laurie Smith.
In bottom of the inning, Kiwanis leadoff hitter Amaris Martinez reached base on a throwing error, advancing to second base.
With the bases loaded, Abbi Cottam singled to drive in the winning run.
ILWU’s top batters were Jaden Priest 2 for 2, Halaina Fergusen with two triples, and Hailey Robinson and Gillian Elofson with two hits apiece.
Martinez was 2 for 4 with three runs for Kiwanis.
Kiwanis improves its record to 5-3.
Pitching shines in Tranco win
PORT ANGELES — Tranco toppled Jim’s Pharmacy 11-1 in a five-inning 12U softball game.
Grace Roening pitched four innings with eight strikeouts for Tranco and Camille Stensgard closed out the game by striking out the side.
The two pitchers allowed only one hit, one run and a total of four walks.
Left-hander Teagen Clark went 2 for 2 with a double down the left-field line for Tranco.
Emi Halberg had three singles and scored twice, Coral Lilley added two hits, Lily Halberg singled twice and made her catching debut for Tranco in the final inning.
Catcher Zoe Smithson contributed a single and threw a bullet to second to nail a runner trying to steal the base.
Taylor Worthington pitched all five innings for Jim’s with six strikeouts. She also fielded her position well, making four putouts, and had Jim’s lone hit.
Abbie Keller scored Jim’s only run.
Elks clips Eagles
PORT ANGELES — Elks shutout Eagles 6-0 in a 12U Cal Ripken baseball game Thursday.
Pitcher Wyatt Hall struck out six and allowed only two hits over five efficient innings before yielding to Connor Bear, who completed the shutout.
Eagles threatened to score in the sixth inning before Bear induced a ground-ball double play to end the game.
Elks committed no errors in the game.
Hall and Damon Gundersen led Elks at the plate, each going 2 for 3.
Hall had an RBI triple while Gunderson hit a two-run single.
Sean Hanrahan was 2 for 3 for Eagles and picked up the loss on the mound.
Nine-year-old Tyler Hunter also impressed for Eagles with outing at catcher, including thwarting an Elks steal attempt with an on-target throw to nail a runner trying to take third base.
