TRACK AND FIELD: Port Angeles girls win 15 of 16 events at North Mason meet

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles girls finished first in 15 out of 16 events at a three-team meet with Port Townsend and North Mason on Tuesday, coming out hot on a warm day.

On a 77-degree March day, The Roughriders were led by impressive performances from distance runner Lauren Larson, hurdler Millie Long and freshman Kennedy Bruch. And all three Roughriders girls’ relay teams won.

“Freshmen girls were on fire. Kennedy Bruch, Jayde Gedelman, Bailee Larson, Eve Burke and Anne Edwards scored a large number of the points that put Port Angeles well above Port Townsend and North Mason to win the meet,” said coach Rodger Johnson.

Larson won two events, the 800 meters (2 minutes, 29.52 seconds) and the 1,600 (5:28.01, nearly 50 seconds better than second-place finisher, teammate Kathryn Guttormsen) and she was on the Riders’ first place 4×400 team (4:49.59).

“Lauren Larson and Kathryn Guttormsen both had [personal records] in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter races. They paced themselves perfectly, and enjoyed running in some warm weather,” Johnson said.

Long won the 100-meter hurdles (16.63 seconds), the 300-meter hurdles (50.26) and the long jump (16 feet, 9½ inches).

Four first-place finishes

But Bruch, competing in just her second-ever varsity track meet, might have had the most impressive day of them all. Bruch won the 400-meter run (1:06.83), the discus (84 feet, 3 inches) and was a part of the Riders’ first-place 4×200 (1:53.18) and 4×400 teams. That’s four firsts in one day.

Other members of the 4×200 team were Mckenzie Musalek, Delaney Wenzl and Bailee Larson, while the 4×400 also included Guttormsen and Emma Weaver.

The Riders’ 4×100 team of Alexis Cobb, Catie Brown, Michelle Alvarez and Eve Burke also won with a time of 54.97 seconds.

Musalek won two individual events, coming in first in the 200-meter run (28.13 seconds) and the pole vault (10 feet, 3 inches). Burke, like Bruch also a freshman, had a pair of first-place finishes herself in the 100-meter run (13.58 seconds) and the high jump (4-10).

Other Port Angeles girls winners were sophomore Myra Walker in the shot put with a distance of 33-10 and Alvarez in the triple jump (28-4½).

For the boys, Port Angeles’ Liam Clark won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches and the triple jump with a distance of 40-11½.

Nathan Cantrell of Port Townsend won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.66 and the Roughriders’ Logan Tyson won the pole vault at 11 feet.

The Roughriders’ next track meet is the Retro Flying A Meet in Port Angeles with North Olympic League competitors (Crescent, Neah Bay and Clallam Bay) next Thursday. Port Townsend is going to the Bedlington Twilight Meet in Lynden on Friday.
