TACOMA — The Sequim wrestling team edged out Steilacoom to claim the Cardinal Classic at Franklin Pierce High School on Saturday.
A total of 12 Sequim wrestlers placed at the nine-team event, with the Wolves amassing 177 points to finish just ahead of the Sentinels (175).
“It was a great team effort,” Sequim coach Len Borchers said. “Everyone contributed and placed.”
Dakota Hinton was the lone champion for Sequim, with five other Wolves wrestlers reaching the finals in their division.
Hinton earned top honors in the 171-pound division after pinning three straight opponents, including the last one in the championship round.
Taking second for Sequim were Clay Charley (285 pounds), Emilio Perete (215), Lopaka Yasumura (160), Cody Field (145) and Derek Fruin (135).
Winston Babb (140) and Chris Falkey (189) both placed third, while Roy Augustine (103) and Luke Mooney (135) finished fourth in their divisions.
Cole Morgan took fifth at 130 and Dorian Halberson finished in sixth at 152.
The Wolves will next travel to Port Angeles for the Battle of the Axe tournament this Wednesday at 10 a.m.
CRISTION UNBEATEN
BELLINGHAM — Nathan Cristion kept his unbeaten streak alive (9-0) at the Graham Morin Memorial Tournament at Squalicum High School on Saturday.
The state-ranked 189-pounder won an individual title to lead a sixth-place Roughrider finish at the 14-team event.
“Not a bad day all-in-all,” Port Angeles coach Erik Gonzalez said.
Cristion won by a 7-3 decision in the 189 finals; the first of his nine wins this season to not come by a pin.
Other finalists were Andrew Symonds at 140 and Kody Steele at 145, both of whom took second.
Brian Cristion (171), Zach Grall (189) and Jacob Dostie (215) all finished third for the Riders.
Other top-five finishers include Kacee Garner at 152 and Brian Sullivan at 160.
The Riders host the Battle for the Ax Tournament on Wednesday starting at 10 a.m.
“We want the ax back,” Gonzalez said. “But it’s going to take a total team effort.”
