SPORTS: Sequim soccer finishes fourth in league with loss to North Kitsap; other prep reports

SEQUIM — The Sequim soccer team had a big obstacle between it and a third-place Olympic League finish.

North Kitsap, which was playing for first place, defeated the Wolves 4-1 on the last night of the regular season.

As the league’s fourth seed, Sequim plays Franklin Pierce in the West Central District tournament on Saturday at Foster High School.

The winner of that game will earn the district’s No. 4 seed at the state tournament.

Sequim (9-7, 29 points) went into the half trailing the Vikings 3-0, and were a man down after midfielder Nicholas Baird was given a red card right before halftime.

“That made it a little tougher, but the kids fought hard,” Wolves coach Dave Brasher said.

North Kitsap scored in the 12th minute on long-range kick by Brady Sparrow that just evaded Sequim goalkeeper Austin Wagner.

Henry Baldwin added a goal four minutes later, although Brasher said he appeared to be offsides.

Sparrow scored again in the 23rd minute, and Baldwin again in the 53rd minute to give the Vikings a 4-0 advantage.

Freshman Thomas Winfield scored Sequim’s only goal on a header off a cross from another frosh, Tyler Ebert.

“It was good to see we’ve got some young legs out there contributing,” Brasher said.

The match was more evenly played than the score indicates, as evidenced by North Kitsap only outshooting the Wolves 12-10.

Brasher named defender Bailey Collins the player of the match.

It was the final home game for seniors Mason Barrett, Omar Flores, Dorian Halverson, Donovan Lee, Kendall Perlwitz, Royhon Agostine and Jerry Bryan.

“It was a tough way to end the regular season, but we have a lot of positives going forward,” Brasher said.

Olympic (11-5, 32 points) beat North Mason to secure third place in the league standings.

North Kitsap (14-2, 42 points) will play a tiebreaker with Kingston today at North Kitsap High School to determine the Olympic League’s top seed at the district tournament.

Port Angeles 3,

Bremerton 2, SO

BREMERTON — The Roughriders finished their season on a two-game winning streak by winning their second win of the year over the Knights.

Port Angeles and Bremerton played late into the night before settling the score in a penalty kick shootout, after nine players from each team took penalty kicks.

For the Riders in the shootout, Vincent Ioffrida, Miki Andrus, Tim Schneider, Jeremy Choe, Wei-Yan Fu and Jack Doryland all made their penalty-kick shots to beat the Knights 6-5.

Doryland, Port Angeles’ goalkeeper, made the winning shot and saved two of Bremerton’s shots.

The Riders scored the match’s first goal in the 16th minute on a nice through pass from Abinet Hayden to Miki Andrus, who placed the ball low and into the corner.

The Knights then equalized on a shot that was deflected and went over Doryland’s head.

Port Angeles took the lead again in the second half when Schneider was fouled in the penalty box and Hayden made the penalty kick at the 54-minute mark.

But, Bremerton tied the score again near the end of regulation by taking advantage of a Rider defensive miscue.

Port Angeles coach Chris Saari named Andrus the offensive player of the match, Doryland and Tristan Isett the defensive players of the match, and Schneider and Hayden the transition players of the match.

The Riders finish the season 3-13.

Despite the loss, Bremerton (5-11, 17 points) will be the Olympic League’s fifth-place 2A team, which earns them a West Central District tournament play-in game today against Clover Park.

The Knights took the JV game 4-2.

The Redskins (6-9, 19 points) lost that game to Charles Wright on Saturday.

Kingston 438,

Sequim 439

SEQUIM — The Buccaneers edged the Wolves in the battle for second place in the Olympic League at Cedars at Dungeness.

Coming into the match, Sequim’s top-5 golfers had a nine-hole average that was 0.4 strokes better than the average of Kingston’s top five.

That match lived up to expectations, with the Buccaneers winning by the slimmest of margins, as a few solid rounds by the Wolves’ upperclassmen were not quite enough to overcome the steady depth of Kingston.

Jesse Francis, the only Sequim golfer to qualify for districts, was the match medalist with a 77. His back nine started on fire with birdies on 10th , 11th and 12th holes.

The Wolves also had the match’s second-best round, and 84 by junior Anthony Pinza, and in third place was Kingston’s Kyle Hammal with an 85.

Other Sequim scores were Jack Shea with a 90 and Travis Priest, Alex McCracken and Matt Cays each with a 94.

The Wolves next play Friday in the Duke Streeter Invitational at Peninsula Golf Club.
