SEQUIM — The Class 2A Sequim boys and girls golf teams stood toe-to-toe with 4A powerhouse Central Kitsap of Silverdale and came up just short Wednesday.
Ryan O’Mera captured medalist honors on the boys side with a front-nine even 37, a stroke ahead of Central Kitsap’s Paul Caswell at The Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course.
The Cougars, though, held off the Wolves by 10 strokes, 201-211, in Sequim’s first match of the year.
On the girls side, Hailey Estes tied for second with a 45 on nine holes as Central’s Katie Lee dominated the meet with a 4-over 41 on the front nine, four strokes better than anyone else.
Central claimed the girls meet 249-266.
The Central Kitsap girls are coming off a second-place finish at the 4A state meet in 2011, and are a force in the Narrows League.
“The conditions were cold and windy but the scores were extremely good for our second meet of the year,” Sequim girls golf coach Garrett Smithson said.
The Wolves improved a lot over last week when they scored 299 as a team against archrival Port Angeles.
On Wednesday, the two teams played double-par pick-up and counted the best five scores of the six players on each team.
Estes tied for second with Central’s Leslie Guzman, both with 45, while Sequim’s Elisa Sallee claimed fourth with 48 and Central’s Krista Holden was next with 52.
Demi Zagata of Central took sixth place with 55 while teammate Matty Wolfe was seventh with 56.
Tying for eighth place were Carly Bergsma of Central and Vanessa Martinez of Sequim with 57 each.
Right behind with 58s apiece were Sequim’s Caitlin Stofferahn and Brianna Kettel.
In the boys competition, Central’s Aubrey Mackenzie was third with a 39 while teammate Chris Kwon was right behind with 40.
Central claimed three of the top four places as Nick McDonald finished with a 41.
Brendon Hudson of Sequim captured fifth place with a 42 while Casey Torres of Sequim tied for sixth at 43 with Central’s Spencer Jacobson and Alex Townsend.
Also for the Wolves, Anthony Pinza scored 44 and Travis Priest had a 45.
The Sequim Wolves next will take on Kingston of the Olympic League on Tuesday at Dungeness starting at 3 p.m.

PORT TOWNSEND — Cole Uvila knocked in three runs and pitched the first four innings to spark the Roughriders to the Olympic League victory Wednesday.
The Redskins stuck with the Riders the whole game, leading 2-0 after one inning and 3-1 after three.
A four-run fourth inning, though, gave Port Angeles the victory.
Michael Konopaski, Nick Tweter, Uvila and Easton Napiontek all had key hits for the Riders in the fourth.
Jacob King pitched the first three innings for the Redskins, allowing only one baserunner.
Bucky Reandeau pitched the final three innings for the Riders, striking out six consecutive Port Townsend batters at one point for the save.
Uvila (1-0) allowed four hits and three earned runs while fanning three for the win.
“The final three innings went scoreless on great pitching by both sides,” Port Townsend coach Pat Kelly said.
Uvila went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored while Kyle Kelly went 2-for-2 with a double and run for the Redskins.
The Riders next play Klahowya today at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

POULSBO — Jake Hudson’s two-run single in the top of the seventh rallied the Wolves to the Olympic League win Wednesday.
Hudson ended up with three RBIs in the game while going 2-for-4.
Hudson also pitched the final three innings, striking out four for the victory.
Karsten Wake, the starting pitcher who gave up three earned runs in four innings, also had two RBIs at bat.
Nick Ramirez went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

POULSBO — The Wolves are still perfect after two-plus seasons.
Makayla Bentz went the distance of six innings on the mound, spreading out eight hits while striking out seven for Sequim while Demiree Briones went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.
Kinzie Winfield went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while Rylleigh Zbaraschuk and Alexas Besand both went 2-for-4 at bat.
Zbaraschuk rapped out a triple and had two stolen bases while Hannah Grubb had a double and Melissa Lewis and Bentz earned two RBIs each.
Port Angeles 18, Port Townsend 0
PORT TOWNSEND — The Roughriders (2-0) gave the youthful Redskins a clinic in Olympic League action Wednesday.
Sarah Steinman (1-0) pitched the entire five innings for the Riders, giving up just one hit while striking out six and walking none.
Port Angeles went through its entire lineup in the first inning, scoring five runs.
The Riders added seven more runs in the second thanks to a two-run homer by Steinman.
Steinman went 3-for-5 with an RBI-double and RBI-single to go with her home run. She also scored twice.
Hannah Wahto scored three times and went 2-for-2 with an RBI-single.
Emily Drake hit a double, scored twice and went 2-for-4.
Maddy Hinrichs also scored twice and went 2-for-4.
The Riders next host Olympic today at Dry Creek Elementary School starting at 4:15 p.m.

SILVERDALE — The Wolves improved to 2-0 in the Olympic League and 2-1 overall with the shutout Wednesday.
Sequim did not give up a set against the Trojans as Stacy Hanson won at No. 1 singles by beating Melena Johnson 6-4, 7-5.
Katrina Chan and Tenisha Powless also won singles matches for Sequim.
Hillary Smith and Anna Prorok captured No. 1 doubles by beating Brandie Vitalich and Morgan Estep 6-3, 6-1.
Other Sequim doubles winners were Hannah Gauthun and Melanie Guan, Elizabeth Shore and Callie Norman, and Heidi Stallman and Maggie Christie.
