PORT ANGELES — Cameron Braithwaite of Port Angeles continues to rule the jumps events as he was the only multiple-event winner at the 2A West Central sub-district track and field championships.
Braithwaite easily won both the long and triple jump events Saturday at Port Angeles High School.
The Roughrider boys won four individual events with Brendan Dennis claiming the 800-meter run title and Nick Shindler capturing first in the 3200.
On the boys side, Jayson Brocklesby and Lopaka Yasamura of Sequim won individual titles while the Wolves’ 4×100 relay team also won.
There were two winners from the North Olympic Peninsula on the girls side, both from Port Angeles, as Zoe Owens captured the 400, and Tarah Erickson claimed pole vault.
The powerhouse North Kitsap boys and girls teams easily won the sub-district team titles, blowing away the competition.
The Vikings took the boys title with 130 points with the Olympic Trojans back in second with 118.
Sequim took fourth with 85 while Port Angeles was fifth with 78 out of seven teams.
The Vikings were even more dominant in girls action, winning with 215 points while Kingston lagged behind with 122.
The Roughriders came in third with 85 while Sequim took fifth with 52.
The top five competitors in each event advance to the district championships this coming weekend.
Braithwaite, meanwhile, continued his quest for a top spot in state as he took long-jump honors with a leap of 21 feet, 10 inches, and he won triple jump with a distance of 43-8.
Second way behind
The second-best long jumper was nearly 3 feet behind Braithwaite while the triple-jump runner-up was more than 4 feet behind.
Braithwaite also was second in javelin with a toss of 173-2.
Shindler and teammate Kyle Tupper went 1-2 in the 3200 run with times of 10:04.76 and 10:09.26.
Dennis claimed first in the 800 with a time of 1:58.89 to round out the Riders’ top finishes.
The Riders had two other individuals advance to districts in three events as Jordan Norberg took third in both javelin (165-5) and pole vault (12-6) while Tony Dalgardno was fifth in the 200 sprint (24.80).
The Port Angeles 4×400 relay team also claimed fourth place and a district berth with Dennis, Dalgardno, Nick Fritschler and Tupper running in 3:39.53.
Brocklesby and Yasamura, meanwhile, sparked the Sequim boys with first places at sub-districts.
Brocklesby took high-jump honors with a height of 6-5 and he also was fifth in the 400 ((53.46).
Yasamura won shot put with a heave of 43-6.25 and he also was fourth in the 100 in 11.71.
Teammate Emanuel Herrera had a strong day in the two hurdles events, capturing second in the 110 hurdles (15.98) and runner-up in 300 hurdles (41.48).
Other Sequim performers earning tickets to districts were Mack Grinnell, second in pole vault (13-0); Judah Breitbach, third in long jump (18-6.25), fourth in 300 hurdles (44.18) and fifth in 110 hurdles (17.14); and Adrian Clifford, fourth in 1600 (4:44.15).
The Sequim 4×100 relay team won the sub-district title with Brocklesby, Dylan Chatters, Herrera and Breitbach running in 43.85 seconds.
The Sequim 4×400 relay team took fifth with Chatters, Brocklesby, Herrera and Clifford running in 3:40.76.
Girls action
Port Angeles had two winners on the girls side as Erickson was first in pole vault with a height of 10-6 and Owens was first in the 400 sprint in 1:03.38.
The Riders had nine girls advance to districts in 11 individual events.
Jolene Millsap punched her district ticket with two second-place finishes, in the 100 (13.05) and the 200 (26.49), while fellow sprinter Elyse Lovgren also will go to districts in two events, third in 200 (27.44) and fourth in 100 (13.57).
Brittany Norberg took third in javelin with a distance of 96-4 while teammate Katelyn Noard was fourth in javelin at 91-5.
Three Riders will be going to districts with fifth-place finishes as Elisa Kilmer will go in the 400 (1:10.49), Elizabeth Stevenson in the 3200 (12:28.56) and Cami Raber in shot put (26-5).
In addition, the Port Angeles 4×100 relay team took third with Lovgren, Khaya Elliot, Allison Hodgin and Millsap running in 52.59, and the 4×400 relay team was fourth with Owens, Stevenson, Kilmer and Millsap running in 4:44.52.
Sarah Hutchison was Sequim’s top performer as she was second in the 300 hurdles ((50.10), third in the 100 hurdles (17.24) and third in pole vault (9-0).
Jasmine McMullin took two top-three finishes as she was second in triple jump (33-1.75) and third in long jump (15-5.75).
Emily VanDyken was fifth for the Wolves in pole vault at 8-feet even.
In addition, Sequim’s 4×400 relay team earned third place with Mandi England, Vanessa Ridgeway, Hannah Hudson and Hutchison running in 4:26.09 and the 4×200 relay team is going to districts after taking fourth with England, Hudson, McMullin and Ridgeway running in 1:53.73.
