SPORTS: Chimacum softball ties its best-ever state finish

PASCO — Chimacum tied its best-ever finish at the 1A state softball tournament after finishing fourth in an 11-10 extra inning loss to Connell on Saturday.

“We had to deal with a lot of factors over here,” Chimacum coach Bobby Cossell said.

“The heat, the pressure and emotion of being here [at state], and I thought they came over here and handled those aspects very well.”

The Cowboys (20-5 overall) dealt with temperatures in the high 90’s in all five of the games they played this weekend.

Chimacum advanced to the state semifinals with a pair of narrow wins, dropping River View 3-0 and Toledo 3-2 on Friday afternoon.

The Cowboys took advantage of fast starts, scoring two runs in their half of the first inning in both contests.

In the semifinals the Cowboys ran into eventual state champion Montesano, who had breezed through its first two games by scores of 18-0 and 15-0.

The trend continued as the Bulldogs topped Chimacum 13-0.

“We hung in through four innings and then it kind of fell apart,” Cossell said.

Due to the quirky nature of the softball bracket, Chimacum had to play Cascade for a shot a the third/fourth-place game.

Chimacum scored two in the first inning again on the way to a 5-3 victory.

Playing their third game of the day with no rest, Chimacum and Connell battled in an extra-inning slugfest.

With the International Tie-breaker in effect in the ninth inning, Connell advanced its runner to third on a fielder’s choice and scored the winning run on a base hit to shallow left field.

“By that point we were pretty much out of gas,” Cossell said.

Cossell was proud of his team’s performance over the course of the season.

“They played their best all season and tied the best finish that Chimacum has ever had.

“Hopefully we will come back and do it again next year.”

Sequim at 2A

SELAH — A young Sequim team rebounded from a jittery 11-1 opening game loss to Colville to finish 2-2 at the 2A state softball tournament this weekend.

“We had six errors in that game, four of them in the first inning, so you could say we were nervous,” Sequim coach Mel Hendrickson said.

Sequim rebounded for a 7-2 win over Blaine and a 5-4 win in eight innings over Pullman.

Lea Hopson knocked the game-winning home run in the top of the eighth to put the Wolves on top, the second blast in as many games for the sophomore slugger.

Sequim then dropped an elimination-game slugfest against Anacortes 11-10.

Sequim entered the top of the seventh down 11-8 before rallying for two runs with two outs to cut the lead to one run with runners on second and third.

The Wolves Chelsea Winfield then nailed a hard shot to the left side of the infield which was picked up by a ranging Anacortes shortstop.

The throw to first narrowly beat out Winfield to end the game.

“We all thought that it was going to go on through but the shortstop made a heck of a play to field the ball and a great throw to get her out,” Hendrickson said.

With the loss the Wolves missed out on a state place, but Hendrickson was pleased with his team’s play at the tournament.

“We are young and I am proud of the girls, especially how they came back and played after the first game,” he said.

“We fought the rest of the way, and I think the team will have a lot of motivation for next year.”

Port Angeles at 3A

TACOMA — Port Angeles ended its most successful softball season in school history with a 1-2 performance at the Class 3A State Softball Championships.

“We came as far as we could go,” Port Angeles coach Buddy Bear said.

“Our goal was to make state and to win [at least] one game and we accomplished both.”

The Roughriders (17-9) started strong, winning their opening round contest against Shadle Park 6-2 at the South End Recreation Area (SERA) fields in Tacoma.

Port Angeles tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth and put across four in the sixth for the winning margin.

Kelsey Hinsdale had two RBIs, while Sonja Elofson, Dani Craver, Sade Pimentel and Molly Ward each had one.

The Rider bats went cold with just two hits in each of their last two games, a 5-0 loss to Enumclaw and a 9-1 elimination-game loss to Sedro Wooley.

Taylor Franich was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Enumclaw while Maddie Lynch-Crumme starred for Sedro Wooley striking out 11 Rider batters on the mound and putting up a 4-for-4 performance at the plate.

“We look forward to a promising future with the help from our core group of seniors,” Bear said.
