Port Angeles hosting basketball tournament
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the Red Lion Hotel Presidents Day Classic Tourney on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14-15.
The tourney has divisions for boys and girls basketball teams from fifth through ninth grades.
The entry fee is $250. There is a four-game guarantee.

Killers claim crown
PORT ANGELES — The Killers defeated Hits and Giggles 25-21, 26-24, 25-21, in the championship match of the Peninsula Volleyball League last week at Peninsula College.
It’s Go Time and Set For Life tied for third.
The champions were made up of players from Sequim, Port Angeles and Neah Bay, including Autumn Ruddick, Jeff Buerer, Orv Charles, Dustin Brunk, Emily Wallner, Jennifer Reynolds, Greg Russell and Jennie Webber Heilman.
Gymnasts compete
SEATTLE — Klahhane Gymnastics teams recently opened its winter season by competing at the Aloha Invitational hosted by Falcon Gymnastics at Seattle Pacific University.
Cindy Liang and Samantha Robbins led the team in Level 3 competition, receiving the first of two required scores of 32.0 or above to qualify for the sectional competition in April.
Liang placed seventh and Robbins eighth in the Junior B age group with all-around scores of 34.60 and 34.05, respectively.
Also attaining the qualifying score were Dylan Baermann, 33.70; Taryn Johnson, 33.25; and Kinzley Henrickson, 32.175.
In Xcel competition, the entire team received the first of two required qualifying scores of 32.0 or above.
Silver Division scores were: Maizie Tucker, 35.65; Amber Dietzman, 35.0; Julianne Jacobs, 34.9; Kelsie Mackey, 34.8; Summer Jules-Strandberg, 34.55; and Ellie Turner, 34.1.
Gold Division competitors were: Cassidy Tamburro, 34.550; Ennisa Albin, 34.525; and Aisha Mathis, 33.675.
Competing in the Platinum Division were: Cassii Middlestead, 34.60; Kianna Miller, 34.525; and Danica Miller, 34.175.
Level 4 and 6 teams competed at the Bainbridge Challenge hosted by Bainbridge Island Gymnastics.
In Level 4 competition, Morgan Mattix placed second all-around after a 33.475 in the 10-year-old age group and Susannah Sharp was second in the 9-year-old age group with a 32.0.
Also competing for Klahhane were Kori Miller, Lainy Vig and Jolene Vaara.
In Level 6 competition, Kianna Miller took first on balance beam (9.3) and floor exercise (9.275) and second in the all-around with a 33.575 in the 13 and older age group to qualify for the Level 6 state meet in March.
Also qualifying were Emma Sharp with a total of 32.10 and Zoe Smithson with a 32.025 in the 11-12 division, and Anne Edwards with a 32.625 in the 10-year-old division.
Sharp won the floor exercise with a 9.25.
Smithson was first on balance beam after posting an 8.6 and Edward took a pair of blue ribbons on vault with an 8.525 and balance beam with a 9.0.
Also competing was Gracie Sharp, who took a first on vault (8.6) in the 11-12 age group.
The Klahhane Level 3, 4 and 6 teams compete next in the Charity Choice Invitational at the Tacoma Trade and Convention Center on Friday, Feb. 6-8.
The next competition for the Xcel team is the Battle in Bellevue at the Meydenbauer Center on Feb. 21-22.
Reffing for a cause
SILVERDALE — Three basketball officials from the North Olympic Basketball Officials worked at the Southwest Regional basketball tournament for the Washington Special Olympics held Saturday in Silverdale.
Scott Remington of Port Townsend, Brad Archibald of Forks and Tom Leinart of Port Angeles worked the Level 5 division of the tournament, which culminated in the championship game in which Shelton advanced to the State Special Olympics Basketball Tournament in Wenatchee, held at the end of February, by beating Sound Athletic of Tacoma 27-14.
All three officials agree that it was an event worth working and are looking forward to going back next year.
