PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles boys golf falls to Kingston; Sequim boys nearing league title

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys golf team dropped its third straight match when it fell to Kingston 188-199 at Peninsula Golf Club.

Logan Kovalenko led Port Angeles on Monday with a nine-hole score of 44 strokes. That was one behind Kingston’s Liam Young, who shot a 43 to earn medalist honors.

Parker Elias added a 47 for the Roughriders, Mathew Locke carded a 50 and Ben Fowler shot 58.

“Consistency is still the issue and the guys all made some great shots but they also made a few tough ones,” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said.

“Focusing on the good shots will help build confidence.”

The Riders host seven other teams — including Sequim, Chimacum and Port Townsend — for the annual Duke Streeter Invite at Peninsula Golf Club on Friday at noon.

Port Angeles (3-5) then concludes its regular season next Tuesday at home against Chimacum (5-3).

Sequim 330, Bremerton 391

BREMERTON — The Wolves essentially locked up the Olympic League championship by routing the Knights at Gold Mountain Golf Club.

Sequim’s Jack Shea played a bogey-free 18 holes Monday and earned match medalist honors with a score of 2-under-par 70.

Josiah Carter shot the match’s second-lowest score and a personal season-best 81. Blake Wiker was third with a round of 85.

Bremerton’s Bryce Kahle was fourth with an 86, and Sequim’s Jade Arnold and Bremerton’s Garrett Hamilton tied for fifth with scores of 94.

The Wolves improve their season record to 8-0. They play at the Tim Higgins Memorial at Kitsap Golf and Country Club on Thursday and the Duke Streeter Invite at Peninsula Golf Club on Friday.

Sequim then concludes the regular season against last-place Klahowya (1-7) next Tuesday.

BASEBALL

Port Angeles 7, North Mason 1

BELFAIR — Janson Pederson continued his dominant pitching stretch and Ben Basden stepped up at the plate and in the field as the Roughriders won their fifth consecutive game.

Port Angeles (6-2, 12-3) sits in second place in the Olympic League 2A Division standings with four games remaining. The Riders host rival Sequim (4-4, 9-6), which is in fourth place, under the lights at Civic Field tonight at 6:15 p.m.

Pederson held the Bulldogs to three hits and one run while striking out eight in Monday’s game.

“Obviously, Janson threw well again,” Port Angeles coach Vic Reykdal said. “He’s given up one run in 20 innings.”

Basden was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI. He also made the play of the game at second base.

With the Riders leading 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Basden jumped up and into a line drive that was quickly gaining altitude. By jumping forward, he was able to get to the ball before the ball elevated too high and became a hit.

“It was probably, if not the greatest, one of the greatest plays I’ve ever seen,” Reykdal said.

“I swear, his 5-foot frame must have been 7 feet off the ground. He couldn’t have gotten another inch out of his frame. It was just an unbelievable catch.

“I think that kind of maybe sparked us a little bit.”

In the top of the sixth, soon after Basden’s catch, the Riders plated four runs to build a comfy six-run cushion.

Colton McGuffey reached base on a throwing error and then moved to second on a single by Luke Angevine.

Basden laid down a bunt that’s main intent was to advance the runners, but Reykdal said the bunt was so well-placed that Basden got a single out of it, which loaded the bases with no outs.

Curan Bradley singled home McGuffey, and Matt Hendry brought in Angevine with a sacrifice fly that also moved Basden to third base.

Bradley later moved to second base. Eathen Boyer’s two-out single brought home Basden and Bradley, making the Riders’ lead 7-1.

Bradley, McGuffey and Boyer each contributed two hits in the game.

Port Angeles is one game behind North Kitsap (8-1, 11-3) in the league standings, and has a one-game lead over Olympic (5-3, 9-4) in Olympic League 2A and two-game leads over Sequim and Bremerton (4-4, 7-7).

The Riders close out the regular season with a gauntlet of games against those four teams, starting tonight against Sequim.

The Wolves defeated Port Angeles earlier this month 4-2.

“We control our own destiny, that’s for sure,” Reykdal said. “We’re trying to win one at time, and the next one is Sequim.”

Quilcene merciless in victories over Kings, Hawks

QUILCENE — The Rangers maintained their firm hold on the SeaTac League by winning their fifth and sixth consecutive games.

They defeated Muckleshoot Tribal 15-0 on Thursday and Mount Rainier Lutheran 10-0 on Monday. Both games were ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.

“As we near the end of regular season, the [players] are coming into their own,” Quilcene coach Darrin Dotson said.

“Boys are maturing and making good decisions. Last two games we’ve had opportunities to make poor choices and haven’t. Playing smart baseball and really collaborating as a team.”

Quilcene’s pitchers only allowed three hits while facing 41 batters in the victories over the Kings and the Hawks.

Andy Johnston recorded the win against Muckleshoot by allowing one hit and striking out six in four innings. Ben Bruner struck out three of the five batters he faced in the fifth inning.

A.J. Prater went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double and a triple and two RBIs. Eli Harrison hit a solo home run and a triple and drove in three runs.

Bruner doubled and drove in two runs, and Nate Weller was 2 for 2 with a triple, a double and two RBIs.

Dylan Schryber and Dustin Hughes both came off the bench to get hits, Schryver a single and Hughes a double.

Johnston also earned the win against Mount Rainier Lutheran, pitching three innings and striking out five while allowing only one hit. Harrison tossed two innings of relief, striking out three and giving up only one run and walking one.

At the plate, Weller drove in six runs while going 2 for 2 with a single and a double. Bruner singled and stole three bases, Olin Reynolds doubled and drove in a run, Eli Mahan doubled and James Soderberg had a bunt single.

“Competition is fierce to get on the field with this team,” Dotson said. “Nine on field, and [we] have 12 more in the dugout chomping at the bit to get in.

“Not one complaint from the guys in the dugout. Nothing but positive support, and the ability to step in and perform when asked.

“Tight-knit group of boys who really care and support each other. This is a coach’s dream team. Proud to be part of these boys’ lives and be their coach.”

The Rangers (6-0, 10-2) host Seattle Lutheran (3-4, 3-9) for a doubleheader today, starting at 3 p.m.
