PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Johnston East Jefferson comes through in home cross country meet

PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson impressed at its lone home cross country meet of the season at Port Townsend Golf Club on Tuesday. The depth of the Rivals girls was enough to take the team competition, while two East Jefferson runners finished one-two in the boys race at the third Nisqually League competition of the fall.

Four Rivals finished in the top eight as East Jefferson edged Klahowya 31-34.

Camryn Hines led the Rivals with a third-place finish in 20 minutes, 40 seconds, while Fiona Fraser was fourth in 21:05, Tadu Dollarhide placed seventh (22:19) and Sylvia Butterfield was eighth (22:28).

East Jefferson also was without lead runner Aliyah Yearian, who finished fifth at state last season.

Klahowya’s Natalie Oathout won the race in 18:54.

East Jefferson sophomore Soare Johnston sped to a win in the boys race in 16:58, 36 seconds ahead of teammate Sebastian Manza.

Henri Huber ended up 18th for the Rivals (19:28), Indigo Gould was 20th (19:36) and Dustin Hines placed 51st (22:08).

East Jefferson will run at the Class 1A Westside Classic District Championships at Chambers Bay near Tacoma on Oct. 29.

Volleyball North Kitsap 3, Sequim 1

SEQUIM — The first-place Vikings used a six-point serving run late in game one to seize control in the Wolves 19-25, 16-25, 25-17, 17-25 loss.

“We were playing right with them in the first game, going back and forth and it was at 19-19 but we let NK have a six-point serving run to close out the set. They served out the game as well,” coach Jennie Weber Heilman said.

“NK did not miss many serves, we ended up missing 13 serves and our serving percentage was really low.”

Sequim (8-3, 8-4) did have some bright spots, taking a game from the Vikings and getting some strong performances.

“We did have some great things,” Weber Heilman said. “Kendall Hastings got 21 kills, eight in game three, Sydney Clark went on a six-point serving run, we were able to run some different offensive sets and we know we can beat them now. We might be facing them again in the league tournament.”

Hastings added eight perfect passes, four stuff blocks, eight digs and served eight of nine with an ace.

Jolene Vaara was active, serving 13 of 15 with four aces to earn the team’s Tough Server honor. She added six kills, a season-high 20 assists, nine digs and four perfect passes.

Angel Wagner added three kills, seven digs, a stuff block and was 13 of 15 with an ace, Ariana Stovall had three kills and Sydney Clark was 15 for 18 on serves with two aces, two kills, 13 assists and seven digs.

Sequim hosts Bainbridge today.

Port Angeles 3, Olympic 0

Heidi Leitz also chipped in four kills and libero Cindy Liang served 14 of 14 with four aces and 10 digs.

Ava Hairell added four kills and two blocks for the Riders (7-3, 7-4).

Port Angeles visits North Kitsap tonight.

Girls Swimming Port Angeles 139, Olympic 36

BREMERTON — The Riders claimed first place in all three relays and won 11 individual events in a dominant win Tuesday.

Port Angeles kicked the meet off with a sweep in the 200-yard freestyle. Harper McGuire claimed first in a close race against teammate Yau Fu, while Lynzee Reid touched in third, a whole 30 seconds ahead of the closest Trojan swimmer.

Mackenzie DuBois topped the field in the 100 butterfly. Yau Fu reigned in the 500 free. Sara Wilson picked up a big win in the 200 individual medley and Grace Possinger vaulted into first on the diving board.

“Among the highlights, we also had two impressive personal records set today,” said coach Sally Cole. “Damun Seera bested her 200 IM time by 8 seconds from just last week, and Brooke St Luise crushed her 500 time by 13.”

Later in the meet, the Riders earned another event sweep this time in the 50 free with DuBois first, Lizzy Shaw second, and Rachel Cooper third.

Lizzy Shaw led a Port Angeles sweep in the 100 free with Emerson DuBois second and Lucia Garcia Pulido third.

McGuire paced the Riders to a sweep of the 100 back, with Danika Asgeirsson second and Ava Fox third.

Port Angeles hosts North Kitsap in its final home meet of the season Friday at Shore Aquatic Center.
