PA boys, girls win three-school meet

KINGSTON — The Port Angeles boys and girls teams each beat Bremerton and Kingston on a muddy, rain-soaked 5-kilometer course.

The boys team was led by Peter Butler, who took first place with a time of 16 minutes, 24 seconds, as Roughriders finished with a score of 25. Kingston was second with 32 points and Bremerton had 59.

Butler was followed closely by teammate Simon Shindler, who took second Wednesday with a 16:26.

Tristan Butler (17:50) was fourth for the Riders, Alek Long finished eighth (18:44), Hunter Dempsey was 10th (19:16), Forest Clark (20:06) took 15th despite suffering a crash and fall on the slippery course and Isaac Newlin came in 19th (22:51).

Senior Sam Waddell ran a 21:54 in the JV race and now moves up to varsity for the next race, Saturday at the Bellevue Invite at Lake Sammamish.

Riders claim top four spots

The Port Angeles girls claimed the first four spots to win 17 (the lowest possible score is 15) to 38 over Kingston. Bremerton had only one runner so the Knights did not have a team score.

Freshman Gracie Long took first for the Port Angeles girls, finishing in 19:26. Willow Suess placed second (20:52), Lael Butler was third (20:53), Annika Pederson finished fourth (21:01) and Madelyn Dougherty was seventh with a time of 21:37.

“Everyone in Port Angeles would be proud of the sportsmanship of the girls there,” Port Angeles coach Pat Durr said.

“Since there was only one runner from Bremerton, all the girls from Kingston and Port Angeles warmed up together so the one Bremerton runner wouldn’t be alone.

“At the start line, all girls made one big huddle; they did the Kingston cheer all together, then they did the PA cheer all together, then they all did the Bremerton cheer all together. It was neat.”

PT squads run to glory

BELFAIR — The Port Townsend boys and girls swept the competition against North Mason and Klahowya on a challenging hilly and wet 3.1-mile course.

Senior Ryan Clarke and sophomore Brennan LaBrie went one-two in Wednesday’s varsity boys race with sophomore Jack Kingsley, senior Mark Street, and sophomore Alejandro Montanez following closely, all within 13 seconds of each other.

Freshman Ally Bradley won the girls varsity race for the Redhawks with a composed finish over Cassandra Pastori of Klahowya.

Port Townsend senior Hanna Trailer and sophomore Mimi Grant were also in the top 10, running as the second and third runners for the girls team.

Port Townsend will compete next Wednesday at home against Bremerton and North Kitsap.

Sequim sweeps Olympic meet

BREMERTON — The Wolves’ boys and girls teams won the three-school meet with North Kitsap and Olympic at Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

The Sequim boys were especially dominant, taking the first four finishes and six of the top seven.

Olympic JV 3, Chimacum 0

CHIMACUM — Junior goalkeeper Myah McKinlay recorded 11 saves for the Cowboys.

“We are very happy with our team’s resiliency in [Wednesday’s] match,” assistant coach Kevin Racine said.

“Our girls put forth 100 percent effort and kept the game close.”

Chimacum has lost senior Ashley Kelly for the rest of the season due to injury and is without senior captain Alisha Leoso due to illness.

Montesano 11, Forks 0

MONTESANO — Goalkeepers Rebekah Johansen and Tristina Smith helped keep the score as close as it was.

“Rebekah came in in the second half and stopped a penalty kick to everyone’s excitement, but the rebound was subsequently put in the net by their shooter,” Forks coach Joe Morton said after Tuesday’s match.

The Spartans play at Tenino on Tuesday.
