PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim controls second half in win over Elma

Crescent comes up clutch in 4th quarter; Neah Bay holds off Quilcene

Sequim Football Boosters are hosting a nine-hole scramble before the Rainshadow Rumble on Friday.

ELMA — Sequim held Elma in check defensively all game, limiting the Eagles to 112 yards of total offense and zero offensive points in a 28-7 nonleague win Friday.

Elma’s lone score came on a 6-yard fumble return in the second quarter.

The Wolves trailed 7-6 at halftime, but stuck to the game plan and controlled the second half offensively.

“We had some offensive miscues early that kept us from really getting on track,” coach Ian Henley said. “Elma did a good job of blitzing our running attack all game. The difference was our guys just trusting the scheme and having the confidence to keep pushing forward and trusting the yards and points would come.

“We practice hard, and that showed in the fourth quarter as we just got stronger and exerted our offensive will as the game went on.”

Senior quarterback Zeke Schmadeke led Sequim’s running game with 27 carries for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Schmadeke also threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Hampton in the fourth quarter.

Liam Wiker capped the scoring with a 19-yard ramble late in the fourth quarter.

Sequim (2-1) hosts Port Angeles in the Rainshadow Rumble rivalry contest at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

CONCRETE — In a wild game in the Cascade foothills, the Loggers hung tough in the fourth quarter, holding the Lions scoreless in the final frame to earn a road triumph Friday night.

“Two-point conversions were everything throughout the game,” coach Brian Shimko said. “When it came down to the wire, stopping them and us getting 2-points was huge. We had been moving guys around to different positions and we got the mix right for the fourth quarter.”

Senior quarterback Henry Bourm put up outstanding stats, completing 15-of-18 passes for 260 yards and four touchdowns while running six times for 95 yards and three more scores.

“Concrete’s defense had four game makers, they would squeeze the box and we would throw a little 5-yard out or a 10-yard out. We were confusing them with the run and the pass, a good mix of the two all game long.”

Dominiq Sprague led the Loggers on the ground with 138 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.

Joshua Berson scored a rushing and receiving touchdown for Crescent, racking up 76 yards combined on the ground and through the air.

Levi Bourm also caught seven passes for 101 yards and two TDs before leaving the game in the second quarter with a wrist injury.

“We had four penalties in the whole game and Concrete probably had 20,” Shimko said. “Concrete had a player kicked out of the game for targeting on his second offense and four or five other unsportsmanlike penalties.

“I was proud of our kids for keeping their heads in the game and not getting baited [into penalties]. Football is an emotional game and I was told to get back on the sideline several times while trying to calm our guys down.

“The craziest thing was the Concrete kids were the nicest group after the game. We had a postgame circle with both teams and it was like night and day.”

Neah Bay 34, Quilcene 26

NEAH BAY — The Neah Bay Red Devils football team, battling a rash of injuries and coming off a painful loss to Liberty Christian last week, hung tough to beat an improved Quilcene squad 34-26 in its home opener Friday night.

The Red Devils were without starters Tyler Swan, Carlos Aguirre, Caleb Cummins and Mathias Greene. Additionally, Jodell Wimberly, who had a big game against Quilcene, went out in the second half with a shoulder injury.

“[Quilcene coach] Trey [Beathard] always does a great job with his kids,” said Neah Bay coach T.J. Greene. “We’re pretty banged up right now.”

Greene said Wimberly had a number of big runs and plays for the Red Devils. He finished with 102 yards rushing on 23 carries. Makyah Chambers, normally a wide receiver, played quarterback in place of Mathias Greene and came through with a couple of touchdown passes.

Greene said Quilcene quarterback Andrew Perez-Lopez had a great game and gave Neah Bay problems. Perez-Lopez finished the game with 117 yards rushing on 16 carries, scoring on touchdown runs of 19 and 21 yards. He completed 6 of 8 passes for 50 yards. Mason Iverson gained 48 yards on six carries for the Rangers.

For Neah Bay, Jodell Wimberly added 75 yards in punt and kick returns for 177 all-purpose yards. He said ultimately, the game came down to the Rangers’ final drive. Adan Ellis had seven carries for 48 yards and caught four passes for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Makyah Chambers led the Red Devils with 18 tackles while Ellis had 11. Taylor Boling led the Rangers with 14 tackles.

The Red Devils were able to pin the Rangers deep in their own territory on their final drive to keep them from scoring.

“It was our first home game, league opener, we had a great turnout, it was nice to get a win,” coach Greene said. He said the team expects Swan back next week but Cummins might be out another week.

“I felt that even though we lost, I was roud of the kids. They played hard and were able to compete,” said Quilcene coach Trey Beathard. “We’re still making mistakes that we need to wipe out.”

Neah Bay (1-0, 3-1) is on the road for two straight weeks against Muckleshoot (0-3, 0-3) on Friday and Darrington on Oct. 4.

Quilcene (2-1, 2-1) hosts Charles Wright (1-2, 1-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Kittitas 27, Forks 21

KITTITAS — After a long, seven-hour trip to Kittitas in central Washington on Saturday, the Forks football team started off tired and sluggish but rallied late in a 27-21 loss by the Spartans.

The game came down to a late call on an onside kick. The Spartans, down just six points, recovered the onside kick with a minute left in the game, but the referees ruled they had touched the ball before it went 10 yards.

The trip was delayed by a bridge closure and a traffic accident. “We played tired and slow,” said coach Trevor Highfield. “We did turn it on late and finished strong.”

Highfield said Kittitas scored a pair of touchdowns on long pass plays in which Forks defensive backs were caught looking in the backfield and lost their man deep.

Bubba Hernandez-Stansbury and Landen Olson both had huge games again for the Spartans. Hernandez-Stansbury ran nine times for 111 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown run. He also passed 18-for-30 for 181 yards, an interception and two touchdowns.

Olson, a week after intercepting the ball three times, had 11 catches as a receiver for 102 yards. He also had seven tackles.

Cashtien Barajas had a touchdown catch and Kade Highfield added a 30-yard reception. Kaden Ward was the workhorse again for Forks, with 52 tough yards on 16 carries.

The Spartans were down 20 points in the third quarter but rallied to make Kittitas nervous. “If we get the onside kick, we definitely had a shot,” Highfield said.

Forks (1-2) next hosts Meridian in a nonleague game at 5 p.m. Friday.

Cascade Christian 72, East Jefferson 6

PORT TOWNSEND — The Rivals scored their first touchdown of the season on a run by sophomore quarterback Silas Morford.
