PREP FOOTBALL: Port Angeles wins 38-34 thriller with Bremerton; other area reports

BREMERTON — Port Angeles won a back-and-forth Olympic League shootout on the road when Sam Burton tackled Calvin Cardwell inside the 5-yard line as time expired.

“The guy was going into the end zone,” Port Angeles coach Tom Wahl said of Cardwell. “Sam got a great angle on him.”

Burton’s tackle ended a drive that began after the Roughriders took the final lead of the game on a 6-yard pass from Ryan Rodocker to Caleb West.

“We ended up really just holding them off,” Wahl said.

“It was a matter of who could hold on the longest. We just ended up being the last [team in the lead].”

The score was 21-18 in Bremerton’s favor heading into the fourth quarter. It was an exciting game up to that point, but the fourth took the thrills to the next level.

Burton scored on a 19-yard pass from Rodocker to put Port Angeles ahead 24-21.

Cardwell scored from 23 yards out to give the Knights a 28-24 lead.

The Riders took it back, though, on perhaps the best play of the game.

Rodocker was in the pistol formation, a few yards behind the center, when the snap went over his head. Running back Nathan Angevine, who began the year as Port Angeles’ starting quarterback, picked up the ball and threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Kellen Landry.

The Riders’ 31-28 lead was short lived, though, because Bremerton’s Ty Haley took the ensuing kick back 85 yards for a touchdown.

Port Angeles then marched down for the Rodocker-to-West score, then the Knights drove deep into Riders territory before Burton stopped Cardwell.

Burton finished with 115 yards rushing for Port Angeles.

Lineman Roberto Coronel scored two short-yardage touchdowns (his team-leading third and fourth touchdowns of the season) from the Riders’ jumbo package and Taylor Millsap returned a kickoff for a score in the first quarter.

The win puts Port Angeles (1-1, 3-1) back in the Olympic League race. After three straight road games, the Riders return home for four straight at Civic Field, starting this Friday against Olympic (1-0, 2-2).

Neah Bay 58, Lyle-Wishram 6

LYLE — The top-ranked Red Devils jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to their 16th consecutive win Friday.

Quarterback Rwehabura Munyagi Jr. threw five touchdown passes for Neah Bay.

The freshman, who took over at quarterback last week, completed 7 of 9 passes for 127 yards.

Three of his touchdowns went to Cameron Buzzell and the other two were to John Reamer.

“He’s playing really, really well,” Neah Bay coach Tony McCaulley said of Munyagi.

“He’s a really confident guy. Makes good decisions.”

Neah Bay’s other scores were on an 11-yard run by Christopher Martinez, a 1-yard run by backup quarterback Benjamin Greene and a 94-yard kickoff return from Cole Svec.

Martinez, who has moved to tailback and now splits carries with Svec, led the Red Devils with 65 yards rushing on seven carries.

He also had a solid game on the other side of the ball.

“Chris Martinez played defense as good as I’ve seen him play,” McCaulley said.

Neah Bay (4-0) opens Northwest Football League play this Saturday against Lopez (3-0) at Oak Harbor High School.

Clallam Bay 62, Muckleshoot 20

AUBURN — The Bruins led 14-6 after one quarter, but coach Cal Ritter wasn’t impressed with their effort.

In between quarters, he told the Clallam Bay players he wanted them to have a bigger lead at halftime.

They obeyed, racking up 40 points in the second quarter to pull away and put the running clock in effect before intermission.

The defense was particularly offensive in the second quarter, scoring on a interception return, a fumble recovery and a safety.

Casey Randall returned an interception 43 yards for a score and Sam Signor recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Randall also returned a kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown in the period and had a 15-yard touchdown run.

Bruins quarterback Kyle Keyes ran for three scores and picked up 116 yards on five carries.

Defensively, Signor had five sacks, and Kelly Gregory and Martin Cummings each had three sacks and eight tackles.

“We were all over their QB all night long,” Ritter said.

Clallam Bay finished with 14 sacks.

The Bruins (3-1) open league play on the road against Lummi (1-2) this Friday.

Coupeville 29, Port Townsend 21

COUPEVILLE — The Redhawks’ bid for sole control of first place in the 1A Olympic League was derailed by the Wolves.

Coupeville rolled out to a 29-7 first half advantage before Port Townsend tried to rally.

The Redhawks scored a late second-quarter touchdown to trim the margin to 29-14.

Two third-quarter Port Townsend interceptions stalled the comeback, but the Wolves (2-0, 3-1) couldn’t build on their lead.

The Redhawks threw another interception early in the fourth quarter, before coming within a touchdown and two-point conversion with 4:01 to play.

Yet another interception, Port Townsend’s fourth of the second half, doomed the comeback with 1:14 to play.

The Redhawks (1-1, 2-2) will hope to bounce back at Chimacum in a game played at Chimacum High School at 3 p.m. this Friday.

Klahowya 36, Chimacum 26

PORT TOWNSEND —Another slow start kept the Cowboys winless on the season.

Chimacum (0-2, 0-4) trailed the Eagles 14-0 after the first quarter and 21-6 at halftime.

Quinn Dowling scored on a 1-yard rush in the second quarter for Chimacum.

The score remained 21-6 after three quarters.

Klahowya added two touchdowns and a safety on a botched Cowboys punt in the fourth quarter.

Chimacum scored three times in the final frame.

James Porter had a 1-yard rushing touchdown and threw for a 1-yard score, and Drew Yackulic punched in another score from 4 yards out.

“All in all, our best overall team effort but not good enough to get a W,” Cowboys coach Mike Dowling said.

“The guys are working hard and we have to keep getting better.”

Yackulic ended with 51 yards on 20 carries and Colten Shaw led all receivers with 42 yards and a block that set up one of Chimacum’s late scores.

Chris Bainbridge led the Cowboys with 10 solo tackles, one for loss.

Rochester 25, Forks 18

ROCHESTER — Ahead 18-17 in the final minute, Forks gave up a 48-yard completion from Juan Jimenez to Bobby Brien and the game-winning touchdown pass, a 19-yard strike to Jordan McLemore, with 39 seconds left to fall to the Warriors.

The Spartans (0-2, 1-3) host reeling Tenino (0-2, 2-2) on Friday.
