PREP FOOTBALL: Neah Bay tames Lyle-Wishram; other area reports

NEAH BAY — Neah Bay came out fired up and popped Lyle-Wishram in the mouth to open their nonleague 8-man football matchup.

“It was our first home game, and [we] came out excited to play,” Neah Bay coach Tony McCaulley said.

“I was hoping for a little tougher game. They played us physical at first, but we jumped on them pretty early with a blocked punt and an interception.”

The Red Devils led 30-0 after one quarter.

Rwehabura Munyagi Jr. recovered a fumble on the Lyle-Wishram 1-yard line on the opening drive, and Cole Svec ran in a touchdown to make it 8-0.

Jericho McGimpsey then blocked a punt that Munyagi recovered and returned to the 4-yard line. Svec again ran it in from there.

Cameron Buzzell intercepted a pass and returned it 48 yards for a score, and a Munyagi-to-Buzzell 25-yard TD pass capped the first-quarter scoring for the second-ranked Red Devils.

“We played our starters until the end of the first quarter, for the most part,” McCaulley said.

“They got more series than last week. And that was the plan, to play them at least a full quarter.”

McCaulley liked what he saw in the short time his starters were on the field.

“I was super happy with our defense,” McCaulley said.

“And our offense executed really well, better than we have all year, and I like to see that.

“[Lyle-Wishram is] better than some of the teams that we have played, so that was a good step.”

The Cougars followed Neah Bay’s lead and swapped its starters as well, so McCaulley said much of the remainder of the game was a youth-filled scrimmage.

Backup quarterback Josey Tyree found Kenrick Doherty Jr. for an 11-yard scoring strike in the second quarter, and Levi Swan recovered a bad snap in the end zone to give Neah Bay a 44-0 halftime lead.

Munyagi found Doherty for a 14-yard score in the third quarter.

Michael McGee also scored in the third, a 22-yard run, and gained 133 yards on the ground for the Red Devils.

In the fourth, Anthony Bitegeko caught a 35-yard TD pass from Tyree that made Neah Bay’s lead 64-8.

Munyagi, who completed 11 of 12 passes for 130 yards, finished the scoring with a 70-yard kickoff return with three minutes remaining in the game.

The Red Devils (3-0) couldn’t fill an open date in their schedule next weekend, so they will be off until opening Northwest Football League play at Tulalip Heritage (0-1) on Saturday, Oct. 10.

“We will probably have a really tough week of practice for the next five days, then give them the next Monday off and get back into the regular game-type practices before Tulalip,” McCaulley said.

Rochester 49, Forks 7

FORKS — The Spartans’ defense couldn’t stop the Warriors’ run game in an Evergreen League loss on Forks’ homecoming game.

Rochester racked up 290 yards rushing Friday, led by 149 from Joseph Foley and 129 from Kage Thayer.

The Spartans, meanwhile, only managed 223 total yards.

Quarterback Cole Baysinger completed 17 of 25 passes for 144 yards.

Keishaun Ramsey caught six of those passes for 36 yards, and Austin Whiting and Kenny Gale had three receptions apiece.

Gale led the ground attack with 9 carries for 55 yards. He scored the Spartans’ only touchdown on a 2-yard run in the second quarter.

That cut the lead to 21-7 and sent Forks into halftime with some confidence and high hopes.

The Warriors, though, erased any doubt with a 28-point third quarter.

“We felt like we could put something things together [in the second half], and it just didn’t work out,” Forks coach Craig Shetterly said.

Gale also had a 61-yard kick return. Shetterly said that earlier in the game, Gale had a return that was even more wide open, but he was tripped up by a player who had been blocked.

For Forks’ defense, Jack Dahlgren had five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble, Garrison Shumack had a fumble recovery and Ramsey had an interception in the end zone that led to the Spartans only scoring drive.

Shetterly said the offense moved the ball at times but was unable to finish its drives.

“We’re putting things together, and getting it settled out, we just have to get over the hump,” Shetterly said.

Forks (0-2, 1-3) travels to face Tenino (1-1, 3-1) this Friday.
