PORT ANGELES — Brent Stephens is moving on, for real this time.
Stephens is leaving after two years as the Port Angeles boys basketball coach to become a full-time assistant coach for the women’s basketball team at Feather River College, a junior college in Quincy, Calif.
“I’m getting paid full-time to coach basketball,” Stephens said by phone Wednesday, adding that he also will teach a few courses at his new school.
“A full-time gig is really ideal.”
Stephens resigned as the Port Angeles coach in the spring before withdrawing his resignation following an outpouring of support at school board meetings from Roughriders players and their parents, as well as players from the sixth-grade girls team Stephens helped coach this past season.
He then worked a full summer with the high school program, including playing in a tournament at Curtis High School, before being hired at Feather River in late July.
He left Port Angeles at the beginning of the month.
The Riders had a 15-26 overall record (12-20 in the Olympic League) in two seasons under Stephens.
He said his favorite memories of his time in Port Angeles are “the fact that we improved so much, and . . . the positivity of the kids and parents.”
The Riders were 12-9 (10-6 in league) last season after finishing 3-17 the year before.
Stephens’ brother and assistant J.T. Stephens also has left Port Angeles and, according to Brent Stephens, has a few options he is considering for his future.
Port Angeles athletic director Dwayne Johnson could not be reached Wednesday for comment about the boys basketball coaching search.
