PREP BASKETBALL RECAP: Forks, Sequim, PA girls have big weekends

Sequim boys improve to 6-0

RAYMOND — It was a big weekend for the Forks boys and Port Angeles girls basketball teams, which each won a pair of tournament games.

The Sequim boys also remained unbeaten with a big nonleague win over W.F. West.

Forks improved its record to a stellar 9-1 with big wins at a Raymond holiday tournament over old Evergreen 1A foe Hoquiam 64-48 and 52-41 against a physical Friday Harbor team. Forks got big games from their big men inside, Brody Lausche and Titus Rowley.

Against Hoquiam, the Spartans ran away with the game in a 23-point fourth quarter, building up the lead to 20 at one point. They were led by a monster game by Lausche, who had 29 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Lausche shot 13-for-16 from the floor. Rowley, meanwhile, contributed 16 points and 14 boards.

Against Friday Harbor, the pace was slow and rugged and the Spartans guards came through with big games. Lausche still had a solid game with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Rowley had 12 points and 15 rebounds. Kyle Lohrengel scored 15 in the backcourt, while Landen Olson had 12.

Forks begins Pacific 2B League play Friday at Ilwaco (2-5).

Sequim 59, W.F. West 42

SEQUIM — Sequim used a balanced attack with three players in double figures and 10 players scoring to run away from W.F. West 59-42 on Saturday as the Wolves remained unbeaten on the season.

The game wasn’t even as close as the final score as the Wolves, who improved to 6-0 held a 54-31 lead at one point.

Mason Rapelje and Jericho Julmist led with the Wolves with 13 points each, while Solomon Sheppard got off to a fast start with 11 points, all in the first quarter. In that first quarter, Sheppard had a big blocked shot, a 3-pointer and two slam dunks to get the home crowd excited.

Charlie Grider added eight points.

The Wolves played an exhibition game at home Monday against Showtime Basketball, an international traveling team from Australia.

Quincy 61, Port Angeles 54

East Valley 73, Port Angeles 63, OT

YAKIMA — The Port Angeles boys basketball team lost a pair of games at the Yakima SunDome Shootout this weekend, though both games were closer than the final scores indicated.

Against Quincy, coach Kasey Ulin said it was a one-possession game with two or three minutes left.

“We just didn’t make enough plays down the stretch,” Ulin said.

Against East Valley of Yakima, the Roughriders started hot, making seven 3-pointers in the first half, led by three from Blake Sohlberg and two from Hunter Flores.

Ulin said there were six lead changes in the final two minutes of the game and Matthew Miller had two huge baskets for the Riders in the final 1:15. Port Angeles was able to force overtime, but then didn’t play well in the OT and East Valley outscored the Riders by 10 in the final period.

The two losses put the Riders’ record at 3-5, though Ulin pointed out that, with any luck in one-possession games, Port Angeles could be 6-2.

Port Angeles will play East Jefferson at home at 5 p.m. today.

Crescent 70, Lake Quinault 20

Willapa Valley 86, Crescent 42

NORTH BEACH — The Crescent boys basketball team split a pair of games this weekend at the North Beach tournament, dropping its first game 86-42 against Willapa Valley, but then coming back later Saturday to beat Lake Quinault 70-20.
