PENINSULA ADVENTURE SPORTS: 270 runners conquer the GOAT

PORT ANGELES — Nearly 270 hardy athletes took on the forests and mountains surrounding Lake Crescent this weekend in the annual Great Olympic Adventure Trail run.

The event, put on by Peninsula Adventure Sports, had two half-marathon waves, a full marathon and a 50K (30.25-mile) race along the Olympic Adventure Trail through the hills north of Lake Crescent, ending at the Log Cabin Resort at the lake.

A total of 182 people ran the half-marathon, 24 ran the marathon and 64 finished the 50K. The marathon (actually 25.5 miles) had 3,465 feet of elevation gain, while the 50K had a total of 3,800 feet of elevation gain. All three races climbed as high as 1,620 feet above sea level.

For the third straight year, Roman Kirkov of Chehalis was the winner of the half-marathon, taking first in a time of 1 hour, 18 minutes, 57 seconds. His time was 18 minutes faster than the second-fastest half-marathon runner.

The winner of the second half-marathon wave was Huy Son of Seattle in a time of 1:37:06.

Lydia Kauri of Monroe, running in the second wave, had the top women’s time of 1:39:51. She finished second overall in her wave and third among all the half-marathon runners.

The top marathon runner was Matthew Copus of Suquamish in a time of 4:02:29. He won in dominating fashion, out-running the second-place runner C.J. Elliott of Port Angeles, who finished second in 4:30:2.

The top women’s runner was Beth Leavitt of Seattle in a time of 4:36:49, good for third overall. In fact, four of the top six marathoners were women.

The 50K winner was Quinn Kimsey-White of Pasadena, Calif., who finished in a time of 4:33:30, edging out Ron Kauri of Monroe, who was right behind at 4:35:12.

The top women’s 50K runner was Lindsay Wourms of Port Orchard, who finished in 4:44:47, good for third overall.

Runners as young as 13 and as old as 67 and from as far away as Minnesota, Washington, D.C., and Virginia for the GOAT event.

The next Run the Peninsula event is the Big Hurt, a four-discipline team and individual event in and around Port Angeles, on Sept. 27. The Big Hurt has a 16-mile mountain bike leg that begins in the hills above Port Angeles, a 2.5-mile kayaking leg along the shore of Port Angeles Harbor, a 30-mile cycling leg west of Port Angeles and finally, a 10K run along the Olympic Discovery Trail east of Port Angeles and back to the harbor.
