GIRLS PREP ROUNDUP: Sequim wins finale; PA has shot at share of title

SEQUIM — The Wolves held off a game Kingston effort Tuesday night, winning 45-41 in a nonleague game.

“It was a hard-fought win. The girls played hard Jolene [Vaara] led us in scoring and rebounds with 13 and 13,” said coach Joclin Julmist.

“Hannah Bates was really good at running the show once again and filled up the stats sheet,” Julmist said. Bates had five points to go along with seven steals and four assists. Jordan Kidd and Addie Smith each hit big 3-pointers for the Wolves, while Taryn Johnson and Hannah Wagner each scored eight.

Sequim has at least a share of the Olympic 2A League championship and is done with the regular season. The Wolves now sit back and wait to see what happens tonight at the Port Angeles-North Kitsap game in Poulsbo.

If Port Angeles wins that game, the Roughriders will win a share of the league title and the two Olympic Peninsula rivals will play a tiebreaker, likely on Saturday. If North Kitsap wins, the Wolves are undisputed league champs.

Port Angeles 67, Bremerton 28

BREMERTON — The Roughriders got off to a slow start, but blew its game open against the Knights with a 20-0 second quarter, going on to win easily 67-28.

”We had a rough first quarter with 12 turnovers and several missed shots inside. We settled down afterward and played pretty well,” said coach Michael Poindexter.

“We had a good shooting night from the field [45 percent] and free-throw line [82 percent]. Lexie Smith, Bailee Larson and Jenna McGoff were a combined 7-for-14 for three-point shots for us,” Poindexter said.

The Riders ended up forcing 32 Bremerton turnovers.

Eve Burke led the team, shooting 75 percent from the floor and scoring 19 points. Larson had 11 points, nine assists and five steals. Smith scored nine and Anna Petty had eight points and seven rebounds.

The Roughriders (12-1, 13-4) play at a tough North Kitsap team (10-3, 13-4) at 7 p.m. today with a chance to tie Sequim for the Olympic 2A League title.

LONGVIEW — The Spartans struggled out of the gate against the No. 2-seed Loggers and trailed 38-16 at halftime in a Class 2B Southwest District IV quarterfinal at R.A. Long High School.

“We just left our game on the bus the whole first half and in the district playoffs against a team like that it’s going to be a challenge to win let alone a huge challenge to try and dig out of a huge hole,” Forks coach David Hurn said.

“We didn’t create enough, or anything in transition in the first half and they were able to flip the script on us. That’s what we wanted to do to them.”

The Spartans (10-8) will face a familiar foe in Pacific League opponent Ilwaco (7-13) in a loser-out district contest at 7:30 p.m. today at Rochester High School.
