COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Peninsula women blow out Edmonds; men lose 77-66

LYNNWOOD — The Peninsula College women and men went on the road and split a Northwest Athletic Conference North Division doubleheader with Edmonds.

The Pirates did as they should in the women’s game by blowing out the Tritons 87-35.

The Peninsula men played second-ranked Edmonds tight until the Tritons pulled away in the last 10 minutes of Saturday’s nightcap to win 77-66.

The eighth-ranked Peninsula women allowed a season-low 35 points to Edmonds — 15 in the first half and 20 in the second half.

The 52-point margin of victory is the Pirates’ second-highest of the season, trailing only their 61-point (106-45) win over the Tritons last month.

In two meetings this year, Peninsula has outscored Edmonds 191-80.

Sophomores Gabi Fenumiai and Madison Pilster led the Pirates’ balanced attack Saturday.

Fenumiai scored 14 points and grabbed a whopping 19 rebounds, including a whopping eight on the offensive end.

The Pirates dominated the boards, out-rebounding Edmonds 55-23. In fact, Peninsula had nearly as many offensive boards, 20, as the Tritons (1-7, 2-17) had total rebounds.

Pilster, Peninsula’s leading scorer, put up 18 points and had five rebounds and two steals.

Imani Smith scored 13 points and had three steals, which tied for the team lead with Miranda Schmillen, who finished with nine points.

Cierra Moss also had nine points for the Pirates, going 6 for 6 at the free-throw line.

The large margin of victory allowed Peninsula to empty its bench, and freshman reserve post Savanna Gonzales scored four points and pulled down five rebounds in less than seven minutes.

The Pirates, who are second in the North Division at 7-1 (13-5 overall), next host Whatcom (3-5, 8-13) on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Orcas are coming of a 60-57 win over Everett on Saturday.

In that game, former Port Angeles standout Maddy Hinrichs scored a season-high 12 points for Whatcom.

Hinrichs was the Peninsula Daily News’ 2013 and 2014 All-Peninsula Girls Basketball MVP, sharing the honor last year with Neah Bay’s Cierra Moss, who now plays at Peninsula.

Gabbi Hossack, a 2013 Port Townsend graduate, is a freshman reserve for the Orcas.

Whatcom also features Kortney Grattic, the NWAC’s leading scorer at 24.4 points per game and last year’s region MVP.

Peninsula defeated the Orcas 77-68 last month in Bellingham.
