ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Maya Wharton, Port Angeles Gymnastics

Maya Wharton

Maya Wharton

Senior Maya Wharton played a big part in helping to lead her Port Angeles teammates to a sub-district gymnastics title Thursday.

Wharton was second overall at sub-districts, a mean feat as there were competitors from seven 2A and 3A high schools. She finished second in both the vault and floor exercises.

She has had a sterling season all winter for the Port Angeles gymnastics team, winning the overall points in a meet with North Kitsap and winning the floor exercise at the Roughriders’ home meet earlier this season.

Wharton’s season isn’t done yet. Her and her teammates will compete in the West Central District 3 State Qualifying meet on Saturday at Auburn Mountainview High School.

Athlete of the Week is brought to you by the sports department at the Peninsula Daily News along with the sponsorship ofSwain’sGeneralStore serving Clallam and Jefferson counties since 1957.
