ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Heidi Leitz, Port Angeles softball

Port Angeles’ Heidi Leitz had a spectacular season coming in to the state 2A softball tournament this weekend.

Before this weekend, Leitz struck out 147 batters in 88 innings pitched.

However, at the state tournament, she blew away her own numbers.

Leitz pitched a one-hitter, a no-hitter and a perfect game as the Roughriders rolled to the state championship game. In that perfect game in the semifinal against Mark Morris, Leitz struck out 19 of the 21 batters she faced in a 1-0 win.

The Riders ended up finishing second at state as they went up against Aberdeen’s Lilly Camp in the finals, who finished the season with 342 strikeouts, beating the Riders 2-1 in the finals. Leitz and teammate Lynzee Reid went toe-to-toe with her all game.

Camp and Leitz dominated the tournament. In four games at state, Leitz pitched 22 innings, allowing three earned runs and six hits, striking out 47, giving her 194 strikeouts on the year. She was a key part of the Riders finishing second this year and fourth last year at state. She will be moving on next year to play softball for St. Martin’s University.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
